Morning’s spearfishing at the house reef brought a surprise. At 3.5 meters depth, two African pompanos were gently swimming at close range.

After so long time my good friend Sheka is back. Taking me to the farthest and deepest pinnacles off Banana Island. A great day in the sea under blue skies. The encounters were few, but the day was rewarding and full.

This is one of the spearfishing days, one waits for the whole year. As I reached my favourite spot and looked down to admire the clear blue water, I spotted a medium jack flirting with the slow rotation of the engine’s propeller and then noticing his myriad friends a bit deeper. I knew it was going to be an exceptionally good day. When I jumped in, hundreds of jacks were indeed playing in the mid-waters. What made me even more excited, is that although I had begun my drift a bit farther away in deeper waters, I could see the bottom underneath theses jacks with clear features that are seldom seen in that depth. I held my shot on the jacks, in the next single barracuda right after them, on the school of 20 barracudas, on some rock fish I could see from the surface, but on the second school of barracudas….I picked the largest one and pressed the trigger. One shot, one fish, and 20 beautiful minutes before we headed back home. Who can resist the best days of Banana Islands spearfishing?
