We regularly observe this Snowy Egret closely following a Mangrove Snake (Erythrolamprus cobella). When the tide is low, the snake hunts Dragon fish by probing small holes in the mud.
As the snake searches underground, fish often panic and emerge at the surface in an attempt to escape. The Snowy Egret takes full advantage of this opportunity, patiently waiting for an easy meal.
Interestingly, the egret is often less patient than the snake. When the snake pauses on the mud before making its next dive, the egret will sometimes peck at it, seemingly encouraging it to continue hunting and flush out more fish.
It's a remarkable example of interspecies interaction - and a spectacular sighting right from the pier at Sutopia Resort!
