Bigi Pan alert! 🌿🦩

Of course, we can't sell tours without experiencing them ourselves!

This time, our office team headed out to Bigi Pan, a unique wetland area filled with creeks, mangroves and swamps. It's home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including many bird species and, of course, the famous Scarlet Ibis. 🦩

It's important to us to experience our tours for ourselves. We want to know them first-hand, so we can give you honest, personal advice and make sure you know exactly what to expect when you book with us.

And honestly… a day out on the water isn't a bad way to spend a working day! 😉🌿

𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗮🌿

This incredible photo, taken by Dick at Brownsberg, captures one of Suriname's beautiful rainforest residents: the Emerald Tree Boa (𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴).

A true master of camouflage, this arboreal snake spends much of its life high in the rainforest canopy, where its vivid green colour allows it to blend almost perfectly into the surrounding leaves.

They are relatively rare throughout South America. Finding one is never guaranteed, which makes each sighting a special one. Still, with the right conditions, location and a bit of luck, we come across them surprisingly often.

𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘁: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗸𝗮 𝗗𝗼𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗴! 🌿

Tiny, beautifully patterned and easy to miss if you're not looking closely… the Polka Dot Tree Frog is one of the fascinating amphibians you can encounter in Suriname.

This little tree frog may be small, but it has a pretty amazing feature: under UV light, its skin can fluoresce green. During the day, the frog is completely green, while at night, it develops a brown back.

When you know where to look, you may find yourself stopping for a little while to get a closer look, and perhaps a few photos.

𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲! 🌿🥳

On August 19, 2021, Dick and Lieke made a decision: "You and me, we're starting a tour company together." Or, well, there was a little more paperwork involved than that. August 19 was the day they officially registered with the Chamber of Commerce. And just like that, Unlock Nature was born.

Not long before that, they had met during a Tafelberg expedition - Lieke as a participant, Dick as the one initiating the expedition. Two completely different backgrounds, but with one big thing in common: a deep love for the Surinamese wilderness. 🌿

It turned out to be the perfect combination. Lieke's corporate background and Dick's expertise as a wildlife specialist laid the foundation for Unlock Nature - a name inspired by Dick's last name, reflecting their passion for discovering nature.

What started with a single tour to Peperpot Nature Park with two guests has grown into a team that gets to do what they love every day: sharing a passion for Suriname’s incredible nature and showing people what makes this wilderness so special.

Today, we lead hundreds of tours a year, from dolphin-spotting trips to week-long expeditions deep into the rainforest. We always dreamt of turning our passion into our profession. And that's exactly why we're so proud today: Unlock Nature turns 5! 🎉
