Happy Maroons Day! 🇸🇷

Today we celebrate Maroons Day. A day to honour ancestors who fought for freedom from slavery and colonial oppression.

During slavery, many enslaved people escaped from plantations and sought refuge in Suriname's vast, forested interior. Through their courage and resilience, they established independent communities, preserving their cultures, traditions and way of life.

Maroons Day commemorates the peace treaty signed between the Ndyuka and the Dutch colonial authorities on 10 October 1760. Other Maroon communities, including the Saamaka, also secured peace treaties in later years.

One of these communities is Jaw Jaw, where these photo's were taken. Jaw Jaw is a Saramaccan Maroon village along the Upper Suriname River where Maroon culture remains alive through its people, traditions, craftsmanship, music and everyday way of life.

In collaboration with the local community, Unlock Nature organises tours in Jaw Jaw, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about the history and traditions of the Maroon people.

Today, we honour the ancestors and celebrate the strength and resilience of Maroon communities. Unlock Nature wishes everyone a Happy Maroons Day! 🇸🇷

Can you believe this iguana was spotted right in the backyard?

From reptiles and amphibians to mammals and birds, we spot plenty of incredible wildlife during our tours and expeditions.

But this iguana? That's a different story. Dick spotted it from the balcony at Sutopia Resort, high up in a mope tree.

The green iguana is one of Suriname's most recognisable reptiles and can often be found high up in trees, where it basks in the sun to regulate its body temperature.

And with the dark storm clouds in the background and the sunlight lighting it from the front, it made for a truly stunning shot.

Today, we're celebrating Anouk, our operations specialist, adventure lover and the person who knows how to keep things running smoothly!

With her strong organisational skills and love for Suriname, Anouk is an important part of the team behind the scenes. She brings structure and calm to everything she does. From logistics to making sure every detail is taken care of.

She loves exploring Suriname, travelling to new places and spending time in nature. Whether it's a relaxing day surrounded by friends or an adventure that gets the adrenaline going, she's always up for it. 🌿

With her love for nature, adventurous spirit and dedication to making things better, Anouk brings something special to our team. We believe every team needs someone like Anouk! 💚

Sunrises in the jungle are something else.

Just look at this one in Maratakka. The mist still floating above the water, the jungle slowly waking up as the sounds of its daytime inhabitants begin to fill the air, and the sun gradually breaking through the trees.

The peace and quiet of a moment like this is hard to put into words.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿!

The countdown is on. From October 27th to November 13th, the second Lucie River Kayak Expedition of the season sets off into the wild. Together with Marcos, Aman Soerdjbali will be leading the team on this 18-day adventure deep into the interior. And we are excited to introduce him to you!

Some of you may already know him from Peperpot Nature Park, where he works as a guide and shares his passion for Suriname's incredible wildlife and nature. Aman has a particular love for herping and spending time in the wild with friends. Combining the two is one of his favourite things to do.

Over time, Aman realised just how much he enjoyed sharing these experiences with others. That passion led him to become a guide and join several of our multi-day tours, where his knowledge, curiosity and contagious enthusiasm quickly made him a natural fit for expedition life.

And this Octobr he'll take that passion even deeper into the interior. During the Lucie River Kayak Expedition, he'll be sharing the places he loves with a team of adventurous paddlers.

We can't wait to have him leading the way!

𝗧𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿!

We came across this magnificent tapir last year during our Lucie River Kayak Expedition. And what an unforgettable encounter it was.

Especially during the dry season, when water levels are low and much of the wildlife gathers around the river, the Lucie River is widely considered one of the best places to spot the Surinamese Big Five: the tapir, jaguar, harpy eagle, giant river otter, and green anaconda.

But having this incredible tapir simply walk right between our kayaks during our expedition was truly special. What a gift!🌿
