Black-tailed Trogon

A stunning forest resident, the Black-tailed Trogon is a treat for any birder’s eyes
Male: Shimmering emerald green with a bold white chest band and bright red belly
Female: Subtle beauty with a gray head and chest

Look for its dark gray tail and listen for its slow, low “coop… coop…” calls echoing through the rainforest canopy.

Found mostly in the Amazon basin — from eastern Panama to northern South America — and yes, right here in Suriname!

Don’t confuse it with the Slaty-tailed Trogon — that one has a red bill and no white chest band.

Brownsberg Nature Park is one of Suriname’s most stunning treasures — home to waterfalls, rich biodiversity, and breathtaking views. But to keep this paradise accessible for all, we need to maintain the mountain road leading up to it.

Erosion, heavy rainfall, and constant use are taking a toll. By joining forces — locals, visitors, tour operators, and nature lovers — we can help preserve safe access to this natural wonder.

🛠️ Let’s work together to protect Brownsberg!
Whether it’s volunteering, donating materials, or raising awareness — every effort counts.

📍 Nature gives us so much. Let’s give back.

These are the Soil Layers of Suriname – From North to South!

Suriname’s landscape tells a deep geological story – literally! From the coastal plains in the north to the ancient rocks in the south, our country’s soil layers reveal millions of years of natural history.

🟡 Coastal Deposits – Young, sandy layers from river and sea activity.
🟠 Coesewijne & Coropina Formations – Sand and clay from ancient swamps and rivers.
🔵 Nox & Mica Formations – Older sediments and metamorphic rocks.
🟤 Igneous & Metamorphic Rocks – The foundation of Suriname’s interior.

🔴 Why is the soil red in some areas like Moengo and Paranam?
That’s because of bauxite – a rich aluminum ore formed in tropical climates. The red color comes from iron oxides (rust!) left behind when heavy rains leach away silica and other soluble elements. Over time, this process leaves behind concentrated iron and aluminum.

📸 Swipe through the layers of Suriname’s earth – from beach to bush, our ground has a history worth discovering!

A New Chapter for Suriname!

As Suriname heads to the polls on May 25, 2025, we celebrate more than just an election — we celebrate democracy, unity, and the shared dream of a brighter future.

This moment is not about who wins, but about the power of every voice, the strength of our peaceful spirit, and the harmony that binds us as one people. Let this election be a symbol of hope, respect, and collaboration across all communities.

Together, we are shaping a stronger Suriname — rooted in understanding, driven by love for our land, and guided by the promise of a better tomorrow.

Let peace and positivity lead the way!

Tetragastris panamensis at Brownsberg Nature Park!

Suriname name: Tingimoni sali

Hidden in the lush rainforest of Suriname, the Tegragastris panamensis stands tall and proud—an evergreen giant reaching up to 20 meters high! This wild beauty produces eye-catching red fruits that burst open when ripe, revealing a sweet, edible white pulp loved by both animals and humans.

Pacas, peccaries, and tortoises feast on the fruit and help spread its seeds across the forest, playing a vital role in the ecosystem. Locals also enjoy the sweet treat straight from the tree!

Aside from its fruit, the tree’s heartwood is prized for its light brown to orange-yellow color, often featuring striking black resinous spots.

Too Many Roadkills, Too Few Road Signs – Suriname’s Wildlife Needs Protection!

In Suriname, roadkill is happening far too often. Sloths, anteaters, armadillos, snakes — our native wildlife is dying on our roads due to speeding, poor lighting, and a lack of warning signs.

Why is this happening?
• No wildlife crossing signs
• No speed limits in key areas
• Drivers unaware of wildlife hotspots

How can we prevent it?
• Install wildlife crossing signs in known danger zones
• Lower speed limits near nature reserves and forested areas
• Create awareness through education and media
• Design wildlife corridors or tunnels where possible
• Train drivers (especially at night) to be alert for animal movement

Our roads shouldn’t become graveyards for our rich biodiversity.

Let’s drive with care and demand smarter infrastructure.

Together, we can make Suriname safer for both people and animals.
