In the 17th century, during rivalry between the Dutch and English empires, the Dutch East India Company highly valued control over nutmeg-producing islands in Southeast Asia because nutmeg was extremely profitable in Europe.
Under the Treaty of Breda in 1667, the Dutch secured control of Run Island in the Banda Islands while the English gained New Amsterdam, the Dutch colony that later became modern-day Manhattan in New York City.
At the time, valuable spices were considered more economically important than the small North American settlement, making this one of the most famous trade deals in colonial history.

Het verhaal van de Vrije Afrikaanse Werkers (VAW) – Cynthia McLeod

Hoewel de handel in tot slaaf gemaakte mensen officieel in 1820 was afgeschaft, ging die in de praktijk door. Ondanks Britse patrouilles smokkelden Nederlandse handelaren nog steeds mensen uit het Afrikaanse continent.

In 1823 onderschepten de Britten bij Suriname het schip SS Légère. De kapitein beweerde dat er aan boord geen tot slaaf gemaakte mensen waren, maar “Vrije Afrikaanse Werkers”.

Deze groep van 130 mensen werd niet als slaaf geregistreerd, maar kreeg administratieve nummers: VAW 1 tot en met 130.

Toen gouverneur Elias in 1841 aantrad veranderde hij de nummers in achternamen. Hij pakte de kaart van Nederland erbij en gaf hen achternamen gebaseerd op Nederlandse plaatsnamen zoals Lochem, Amstelveen, Leerdam, Kamperveen en Tilburg.
