The use of new technologies on coffee cultivation seeks to increase the productivity of coffee plantations, make coffee production a sustainable activity and fundamentally raise the standard of living of coffee families, was the subject of conversation with our new friends from Guatemala.

Internationally, low coffee prices have caused many producers to change the use of their farms, one option is planting corn, known herer as “milpas”. During the tour we were able to visit a cornfield, and see the harvest process.

It was a great pleasure to meet new friends from Holland, and share information and different points of view on coffee consumption. The Netherlands has historically been one of the countries that has contributed most to the spread of coffee cultivation in the world.

For centuries, this product represented a commercial item of great importance for Dutch entrepreneurs, as well as for the inhabitants of their colonies.
In the 17th century after taking possession of the port of Moka in Yemen, the Dutch brought coffee seeds that they grew in the botanical garden of Amsterdam. Then they established cash crops in their colonies in India, Java and Oceania. Thus they became the main supplier of coffee for Europe until the entry of Brazilian coffee to the world market in 1850.

One of the most culturally and genetically important C. arabica varieties in the world, known for excellent quality in the cup at the highest altitudes. Historical records indicate that coffee seeds were taken from the coffee forests of Southwestern Ethiopia to Yemen.
It is a tall variety characterized by relatively low production, susceptibility to the major diseases, but excellent cup quality.
French missionaries introduced Bourbon from Yemen to Bourbon Island (now La Réunion)—giving it the name it has today—in the early 1700s. The Bourbon variety was introduced to Brazil around 1860, and from there rapidly spread north into other parts of South and Central America, El Salvador was not the exception.

Recent field studies have revealed many bird species in El Salvador, suggesting that the country's few protected areas may be especially important for conserving regional biodiversity. Seventeen percent of the landscape or 359,000 ha is covered with natural forest. Another 196,000 ha (9% of El Salvador) are coffee plantations, a habitat similar to the forest used by many birds.
