While we are always sad to see the summer end, we always look forward to our annual Labor Day BBQ. The aroma of the smoke and the sound of the food sizzling on the grill alone signals a great time. While any type of grilling is terrific, we prefer using hardwood charcoal whenever possible. As with any type of cooking, it is all about buying the best ingredients possible. Be sure to keep it simple and let the ingredients shine. Beef is the all-American meat, whether you decide to serve burgers or Prime New York Strip Steaks, or BBQ pork (shown below from Lindy and Grundy), they are all sure to be crowd pleasers. Bacara is one of our favorite California beach-side resorts. We love the sprawling Mediterranean style hillside resort with wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean. The resort sits next to the Sandpiper golf course, one of the best golf courses open to the public in the U.S. and has spectacular Ocean views throughout the course. The resort also has direct beach access where you can rent kayaks, take surfing lessons, jog on the sand or just relax. Bacara has one of our favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara, Miró. The restaurant sits on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The interior reflects the vibrant colors and imagination of the restaurant’s namesake, the Spanish abstract impressionist Joan Miró (1893-1983). Adjoining is a spacious terrace with panoramic Pacific views. Miró serves innovative New American Cuisine, using classical techniques with a focus on regional ingredients. The resort is not without issues so be prepared. The service can often be disorganized and at times falls short of the level you would come to expect at a high-end resort. The resort is also located in Goleta, so keep in mind driving into downtown Santa Barbara is a bit of a hike. As far as the overall experience you would have a hard time finding a better beach resort in Southern California. For those looking to explore the area, Montecito is a great destination to see some spectacular Spanish colonial estates overlooking the magnificent oak woodlands. Montecito is just south of Santa Barbara and the village has an array of quaint shops and restaurants. If you decide to make your way into the town of Santa Barbara for dinner, make sure to go to Bouchon (not affiliated with Thomas Keller’s Bouchon restaurant). Bouchon serves elegant California French cuisine and offers a great selection of Santa Barbara County wines. The Hungry Cat is another good choice if you are looking for a fun seafood restaurant. Paso Robles is our favorite destination for Central Coast wines. The countryside is beautiful with rolling green hills and colorful birds soaring through the sky. It is also very close to the central coast beaches where you can see spectacular sea life, including Elephant Seals and Harbor Seals. Justin Winery is a great place to stay as they have four guest rooms on the vineyard. During our recent trip to Paso, we stayed in Justin’s Tuscany Villa and would happily return. Dinner at Justin is also a fantastic experience as the food is really nice and is served in a very intimate setting. Their wine selection is excellent and Justin makes a number of terrific wines. We continue to rave about the 2008 Justin Isosceles Reserve we had during our meal. If you prefer to stay in the main town, we also recommend Hotel Cheval. It is nice boutique hotel with only 16 rooms. Our favorite restaurant in the town is Artisan, serving seasonal and locally grown produce and foods. Their wine list features many Paso Robles wines, as well as top wines from other California regions. In addition to Justin Winery, one of our other favorite Paso wineries to visit is Tablas Creek, a partnership between the owners of Château de Beaucastel and Robert Haas, longtime importer and founder of Vineyard Brands. The families created a partnership in 1985 and in 1989 purchased a 120-acre property in the hilly Las Tablas district of west Paso Robles for its similarities to Châteauneuf du Pape: limestone soils, a favorable climate, and rugged terrain. At the winery, they are selling the 2004 Esprit de Beacastle as their current library wine. We highly recommend as it is drinking extremely well. From Paso Robles, head over to the Cambria / San Simeon area. The area is home to Hearst Castle and Piedras Blancas lighthouse, which overlooks a rare breeding ground for elephant seals. Other activities include hiking, fishing, horseback riding with coastal views or kayaking in the Ocean. We really enjoyed watching the elephant seals at the Hearst San Simeon State Park. These seals can reach up to 14 feet and 6,000 pounds. The sheer number of seals are amazing, watching them wrestle with each other in the water or sun themselves on the beach and covering their bodies in sand. We also highly recommend a very casual lunch spot called Sebastian’s Store in San Simeon. It is right below Hearst Castle and serves excellent sandwiches, specializing in beef from Hearst Ranch. They also have a tasting room where you can enjoy lunch with wines from Hearst Ranch Winery.
