A millenary ritual

Among the Arab tribes of northern Chad, an ancient beauty ritual survives: the nomadic women of the Ouled Badri, Ouled Hamid or Bassara tribes are known for their thick, shiny hair, which often falls well below the navel. The key to maintaining their length? Chébé, an ancient hair care ritual practised by their ancestors for thousands of years.

This miracle plant known as Chébé (croton gratissimus) grows in the granite mountains of the Guera region. From February to April, its seeds are harvested, then sun-dried, crushed and roasted before being mixed into a fine, silky powder. To prepare the treatment before application, a woman prepares three bowls, one containing water, the second with the Chébé powder and the third with a mixture of oils and butters, usually shea butter and sesame oil. Then, between alternating layers of water and the mixture of oils and butters, she spreads the Chébé powder on sections of the person's hair
