A proud moment for all Thais 🇹🇭✨
Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat has officially been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Cultural World Heritage Site on 25 July 2026.
This marks the first Cultural World Heritage Site in Southern Thailand and the sixth in the country, recognizing the site’s Outstanding Universal Value as a spiritual center of Buddhism that has flourished for more than 1,250 years.
At the heart of the temple stands the magnificent Phra Borommathat Chedi, a Sri Lankan-style bell-shaped stupa crowned with a gold-covered spire containing over 725 kilograms of gold. It is surrounded by 153 subsidiary stupas, alongside numerous historic monuments that preserve the rich legacy of Thailand’s history, art, and civilization.
Another defining cultural treasure is the Hae Pha Khuen That Festival, a sacred tradition that has been practiced for nearly 800 years. Every year on Makha Bucha Day, thousands of devotees carry sacred cloths stretching over 1,000 meters to ceremonially wrap the principal chedi. This enduring tradition reflects that the temple is not only a historic monument, but also a “living World Heritage” where faith, culture, and community continue to thrive.
This inscription is a testament to the enduring significance of Thailand’s cultural heritage and a shared source of pride for the Thai people. It also ensures that this extraordinary legacy will continue to inspire, educate, and be safeguarded for generations to come.

“วัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร” จังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช ได้รับการขึ้นทะเบียนเป็น มรดกโลกทางวัฒนธรรม (World Heritage Site) โดยองค์การ UNESCO อย่างเป็นทางการ เมื่อวันที่ 25 กรกฎาคม 2569
นับเป็น มรดกโลกทางวัฒนธรรมแห่งแรกของภาคใต้ และ แห่งที่ 6 ของประเทศไทย สะท้อนคุณค่าอันโดดเด่นของแหล่งมรดกที่เป็นศูนย์กลางพระพุทธศาสนามายาวนานกว่า 1,250 ปี
ภายในวัดโดดเด่นด้วย องค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ เจดีย์ทรงระฆังคว่ำแบบลังกาอันสง่างาม ปลียอดหุ้มทองคำหนักกว่า 725 กิโลกรัม รายล้อมด้วยเจดีย์บริวาร 153 องค์ พร้อมโบราณสถานสำคัญที่บอกเล่าเรื่องราวทางประวัติศาสตร์ ศิลปกรรม และอารยธรรมอันทรงคุณค่า
อีกหนึ่งเอกลักษณ์สำคัญคือ ประเพณีแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ ประเพณีศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่สืบทอดต่อเนื่องเกือบ 800 ปี โดยพุทธศาสนิกชนร่วมกันอัญเชิญผ้าพระบฏและผ้าพระธาตุกว่า 1,000 เมตร ขึ้นห่มองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ในวันมาฆบูชาของทุกปี สะท้อนให้เห็นว่า ที่นี่มิใช่เพียงโบราณสถาน หากแต่เป็น “มรดกโลกที่ยังมีชีวิต” ซึ่งยังคงเชื่อมโยงผู้คน ศรัทธา และวิถีวัฒนธรรมไว้อย่างงดงาม
การขึ้นทะเบียนครั้งนี้เป็นการยืนยันคุณค่าอันโดดเด่นระดับสากลของมรดกไทย และเป็นความภาคภูมิใจร่วมกันของคนไทยทุกคน พร้อมส่งต่อมรดกอันล้ำค่านี้ให้คนรุ่นต่อไปและผู้คนทั่วโลกได้ร่วมเรียนรู้ ชื่นชม และอนุรักษ์ไว้สืบไป
