Not every day the ocean decides to introduce itself like this.
Our guide was leading the snorkelling session at Phi Phi when a blacktip reef shark appeared out of the blue and just swam right alongside the group like it belonged there because it does.
Blacktip reef sharks are completely harmless and they are one of the most beautiful things you can see underwater in Thailand.
There is something about being in the water with them that changes how you think about the ocean, even just for a moment.
The guests went quiet underwater, then came up to the surface smiling. That is the part we always remember most.
These encounters cannot be planned or promised, but when you visit with a small group and the water is calm, the marine life tends to carry on as if you are not even there.
That is when you see things like this. The reef shares more of itself when fewer people are around, and mornings like this one remind us why we do what we do the way we do it.
