How Extreme Heat is Disrupting Travel in Tropical Destinations
Extreme heat is no longer just an inconvenience—it’s altering the way travelers experience tropical destinations like Thailand and the Philippines. Recently, my daughter mentioned her friend’s family, who are currently in Bangkok, skipped a temple tour they had already paid for because of the scorching weather. The girl was left to explore alone while the rest of her family stayed behind. Now, there’s concern they might cancel more tours, wasting money and missing out on key experiences.
As operators, we’re seeing more last-minute no-shows, shortened excursions, and frustrated travelers who feel forced to choose between comfort and their bucket-list activities. The reality? If we don’t adapt, extreme heat will keep hurting both guest satisfaction and our bottom line.
How to Handle Extreme Heat While Traveling:
1. Adjust Your Schedule – Visit outdoor sites at sunrise or late afternoon; avoid midday.
2. Stay Prepared – Bring cooling towels, portable fans, and electrolyte packs.
3. Book Smart – Opt for tours with shaded routes, AC transport, or flexible rescheduling.
4. Listen to Your Body – If you feel dizzy or fatigued, stop and cool down immediately.
5. Communicate Early – If heat is an issue, ask operators about alternatives before canceling.
The key is balancing safety with experience—because no one should have to choose between missing out or risking heatstroke.
