Today, 7 April, marks 259 years since Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand, fell to Burmese forces, ending a kingdom that had flourished for 417 years.
Ayutthaya was a major centre of civilisation, culture, and trade in Southeast Asia. Its strategic location along the Chao Phraya River allowed it to become a hub for international commerce, connecting Thailand with China, India, Persia, Japan, and Europe. The city was renowned for its grand palaces, temples, intricate arts and crafts, literature, and diplomatic relations.
Its fall marked a dramatic turning point in Thai history but also paved the way for the rise of Thonburi under King Taksin and the eventual establishment of Bangkok.
The legacy of Ayutthaya continues to influence Thai culture, architecture, governance, and national identity, serving as a symbol of resilience and the enduring importance of preserving cultural heritage.
