There is no better way to experience Bangkok’s Chinatown than simply getting lost. The three roads you need to know are Song Wat, Soi Wanit 1/Sampeng Lane, and Yaowarat. Between these three parallel roads are networks of small streets full of markets, street foods, local businesses that will take up an entire of afternoon to explore.

Song Wat primarily caters to locals. Businesses here that have lasted generations continue to sell very specific consumer/industrial wares. Unless you need weighing scales or aluminum kitchen ware, head on over the Soi Wanit 1/Sampeng Lane. Here is where the real market action is for a curious visitor. Shop til you drop and enjoy viewing old shophouses that run endlessly on both sides.

If you time things right and you emerge out onto Yaowarat in the evening, get ready to join some locals for some of the most well known street foods in town. Seafood, noodles, fruit juices, desserts, you name it. Best way to get the most out of this food heaven? Taste hop. Snack on whatever catches your eye and keep on moving.

Thai features meeting Chinese Buddhist architectural designs makes Chee Chin Khor a unique temple on the river.

On the west side of the Bangkok River stands a Chinese pagoda that is unmissable by anyone travelling by boat. The striking orange roofed tower has a prominent appearance yet a low profile – often people wonder what it is but cannot find any answers. Wonder no more. The structure is part of the Chee Chin Khor Moral Uplifting Society temple complex that has been hiding in plain sight for decades.

Bangkok National Museum showcases historical artifacts that transport you back many eras and make you realize how rich the Thai culture truly is.

Bangkok National Museum was once Wang Na, translated from Thai as the Front Palace, where the viceroy took up residence. Most often, they were a son or brother of the king. The grounds are expansive and layout typical of the complexes of royalty. A stroll around allows one to appreciate the preserved architecture and the importance it once held in the system of royal residences. When King Chulalongkorn abolished the heir presumptive tradition and replaced it with the concept of crown prince as heir apparent, its use became obsolete. The last viceroy lived there until 1885 and it was turned into a museum in 1887 to exhibit the large collection of artifacts that King Mongkut had inherited and amassed.

Bangkok is largely known throughout the world as primarily a Buddhist city and that should come as no surprise to anyone. The city is chock-full of opulent temples serving all sects of Buddhism and its populace are devoted practitioners of the religion. While Thailand does not formally recognize a state religion, it does tie Buddhism closely to Thai traditions. The dominance of one religion often makes one forget that religious diversity can still exist. As such, many travelers are pleasantly surprised by the existence of the Bangkok Protestant Cemetery, one that dates back all the way to 1853.

The Bank of Thailand Learning Center is a working space and an educational museum with a magnificent river vista.

The Bank of Thailand (BOT), the central bank of the country, was founded in 1942 to deal with management the state’s currency, money supply, and other functions. In 1945, BOT moved into Bang Khun Phrom Palace where former Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandhu resided until his forced exile. Across Samsen Road from BOT’s headquarter, the national banknote printing plant was built right on the riverfront. The facility was in function until operations moved elsewhere, forcing the building to close. To commemorate its 75th anniversary, BOT decided to open a learning center and the printing plant was chosen as the site. In 2018, Bank of Thailand Learning Center opened its doors to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into its printing past and more.
