Happy Loi Krathong everyone: 6th Nov 2014

During the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, Bangkok becomes a wonderful place full of lights. It's the Loi Krathong, the Festival of lights. Loi Krathong refers to the lotus-shaped receptacle that can float on the water. They can contain food, nuts, joss sticks, flowers, coins and a compulsory candle. The ritual is very simple, build a Loi Krathong, make a wish and let it float away with the current of a river. The flame of the candle signifies longevity, fulfillment of wishes and release from sins. People will watch their floating devices intensely hoping the candle will last as long as possible. During the twelfth full moon, thousand of people will follow the same ritual along Bangkok rivers and canals transforming the water in an amazing bed of candles.

The city of Bangkok will animate the day with beautiful parades, traditional Thai dancing, concerts, fireworks and beauty pageants. Bridges and building will also have their own suit of lights.

From few days before the full moon to the day of the full moon, spectacular illuminated barges will light up the Chao Phraya River from the Memorial Bridge to Krungthon Bridge.

Loi Krathong is one of the most renowned festival of Thailand and a good occasion to inhale the mystic atmosphere of the full moon celebration.

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING TO THAILAND:

1.The best-dressed woman on any given train, boat, or sidewalk is probably a ladyboy.

2.Eat as many mangoes as you possibly can. The mangoes in Thailand are the most delicious in the world.

3.Use public transportation. The BTS (Subway) and MRT (Light Rail) are cheap, convenient, and fast. You can get just about anywhere using these systems and they are really easy to use. The maps make sense, the token system is efficient and simple, and the trains are kept very clean. Get a day pass to save extra money.

4.The Best Food is On the Street. If you want to really experience delicious Thai food – hit the streets. You’ll find an endless amount of incredible dishes. Most of the people working at street food stalls won’t speak much English, just point to something delicious. Some will even have an English menu. You can expect to pay 30-50 baht per meal, around $1-2.

5.Respect the King and Royal Family. This is the most important thing you should know before visiting Thailand. Do not talk negatively about the King or any member of the Royal Family. It is illegal and you can find yourself in jail for uttering a few negative phrases.
