Blocks that once housed British Royal Artillery officers now hold the check-in desk.

Capella Singapore opened in March 2009 on a Sentosa hilltop known as The Knolls, built around two Tanah Merah bungalows dating to the 1880s and gazetted for conservation in 2000. Foster + Partners restored them and extended outward in a curve that reads, from the air, as a figure of eight. Jaya Ibrahim did the interiors; André Fu handled the later refresh.

Peacocks patrol the lawns. Auriga Spa times its treatments to the lunar cycle. It remains the most architecturally interesting hotel in Singapore.

The gibbons start before the light does.

In Bokeo Nature Reserve, in the far north of Laos, black crested gibbons sing at first light — a rising duet between mated pairs that carries several kilometres through the canopy. You hear it from a treehouse that has no stairs, no path, and no door. The only way in is a zipline, and the longest cable in the network runs close to 400 metres across the valley.

Two hours' walk from the nearest road, three hours from Huay Xai. Coffee arrives by cable at dawn.

Five nights in Luang Prabang and nowhere else. That is the whole design.

The Quiet Capital is our flagship Laos itinerary and it moves slowly on purpose: Kuang Si at first light while the pools are empty and cold, Pak Ou Caves reached upriver by boat rather than road, the Royal Palace museum with someone who can read what is on the walls, and a private dinner with a Luang Prabang historian. Two mornings left deliberately open.

The last stretch into Shinta Mani Wild is on a zipline. You clip in above the canopy, cross the river, and land at the bar — which is also where you check in. There is no road to the camp, no power line overhead, no flight path.

Bensley built the fifteen tents around a 1940s expedition idea: campaign furniture, antiques, canvas over dark Khmer hardwood, air-conditioned bedrooms behind it all. Everything is included, down to the spa among the boulders. No meal times, no menus, no bill at the end.

An Adventure Butler shapes each day. Ours usually starts with the waterfall before breakfast.

Shinta Mani Angkor sits ten minutes from the Angkor temples, in a property Bill Bensley designed as a decompression chamber rather than another grand hotel — courtyards, cool tile, a pool wing built for the heat of the day. Three days, two kingdoms. Mekong Kingdoms' Bohème runs the stretch between Luang Prabang and the Thai border, tracing the old boundary of Lanna and Lan Xang — river cliffs, teak forest, fishing villages that don't see many boats. Captain Houmphanh has navigated this water for 35 years; he still points out sandbanks from memory rather than the chart. We route advisors' clients this way when Luang Prabang alone isn't enough river, and the slow-boat backpacker circuit is the wrong register entirely.

Two carriages run this route daily, in opposite directions — one departing Da Nang each morning for Quy Nhon and on to Nha Trang, six hours and roughly 320km of coastline, with a three-course gourmet meal on board. The other leaves Nha Trang in the afternoon, back through Quy Nhon, with an afternoon tea of local caviar and Vietnamese cheeses over the five-hour, 215km run. We've started routing Central Vietnam itineraries around it deliberately, not as an add-on between hotels.

Baliem Valley Resort sits at 1,900 metres in Papua's central highlands, on a 1,600-hectare property looking out over the Trikora Mountains. The fifteen bungalows are built in the traditional honai style, and the surrounding land is farmed by Dani communities who have worked this valley for generations. It's a two-hour flight from Jayapura and a world away from the Bali most clients already know.
