Construction of the Second Runway at U-Tapao International Airport (Rayong–Pattaya) has now progressed by more than 23%.

The project includes a 3,505-meter-long, 60-meter-wide runway, along with taxiways and other supporting infrastructure, and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

In addition, the U-Tapao Aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Center is expected to sign its construction contract in the middle of this year, while the new Air Traffic Control Tower is scheduled to be put out to tender later this year.

These developments are all part of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) Aerotropolis (Airport City) Project, which aims to transform U-Tapao into one of Thailand’s key aviation and logistics hubs.

Foreign visitors arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport are reportedly facing immigration waits of two to three hours during some busy periods. Tourism industry sources said stricter screening and limited immigration staffing are creating bottlenecks at Thailand’s main international gateway.

The delays are being linked to tougher checks on suspected grey-capital networks, transnational crime concerns and tighter controls on Fast Track services. Tourism operators are urging agencies to add staff, improve procedures and use more technology to reduce queues and protect Thailand’s tourism image.
