We highly recommend taking the sleeper train to Lhasa, Tibet. It allows your body to acclimatize more gradually while offering breathtaking views as the landscape changes from Chengdu’s valleys to the mountains and vast Tibetan Plateau.

Did you know Taiwan’s national forest was once a logging site, starting in 1915? 🌲🚂

This is Taipingshan in Yilan, where over 100 km of forest railway once carried giant cypress trees down the mountain. In the 1980s, Taiwan banned commercial logging, and places like this became protected forests we can now walk, listen to, and care for.

On this Pilgrimage Asia tour, we trace the old rails as a quiet pilgrimage - acknowledging what was taken, honoring the past, and feeling grateful for nature's generosity.

Yamdrok Lake on a great weather day ☀️

Yamdrok Lake sits at 4,441 meters (14,570 feet) above sea level in Tibet. A major fun fact is that from an aerial view, its long, winding, and branching shape looks just like a coiling scorpion.

Unique Lake Facts:

🏔️ Scorpion shape: The twisting banks have many arms that mimic a scorpion or coral branches.

🏔️ No traditional outlet: Water level stays balanced purely through melted snow and evaporation.

🏔️ Sacred status: It is one of the three great holy lakes of Tibet, tied to the soul and life of the local people.

🏔️ Color-shifting water: The brilliant turquoise-blue color changes shade depending on the angle of the sun.

Walking through the streets of Lhasa, I found myself looking beyond the famous Potala Palace. The real character of the city is in the streets — small family-run shops, local food, Tibetan tea houses, handicrafts, textiles, incense, prayer wheels and everyday products. Around the old town and Barkhor Street, business and devotion are woven into the same landscape, with pilgrims making their way around the Jokhang while locals go about their daily lives.

The Potala Palace may tell us about Tibet’s history, but the streets tell us about its living culture. Behind every little shop and handmade product is someone making a living, keeping a skill alive, or passing something from one generation to the next. For me, this is what makes walking around Lhasa so fascinating — not just seeing the monuments, but seeing how people live, work and keep their culture alive today.
