This is possibly the most interesting temple in Thailand as it combines history, medical science and is a center for meditaion and traditional massage training. Its official name is Wat Phrachetuphon Vimon Mangkararam Ratchaworamahawihan, although it is commonly called Wat Po. Founded during the 16th century, Wat Pho is most famous for the golden reclining Buddha that measues 46 metres and has feet inlaid with mother-of pearl. In more modern times, Wat Pho has gained international recognition as a meditation centre and for the traditional Thai massage that is both practiced and taught here. Bas reliefs around one of the main buildings depict the story of the Ramakian . The walls have marble tablets describing basic anatomy and treatments. In the late afternoon, traditional medicine practitioners are there to dispense herbal mixtures. Nearby, there is a cloister where you can have a traditional Thai massage for a very small payment.

** In 2008, the historic marble inscriptions in Wat Pho have been registered with UNESCO’s Memory of the World (MOW) as MOW documentary heritage for Asia and Pacific Region

Hi everyone!

Welcome back to our ASEAN Blog. Finishing off this week is Laos and it's natural attractions!

The term wilderness is much misused, but it can truly be applied to much of Laos. The mighty Mekong river and its tributaries together create perhaps the single most important geographic feature of the country. Further north, the terrain becomes more hilly, and the jungle-less explored. Luang Namtha is the far-northern town which makes the best base for those visitors who really want to see the truly remote Lao wilderness, and directly experience the lifestyles of the various hill tribes in this region.

Experiencing local village life, taking it all in and doing absolutely nothing should be the aim here. There are though some wonderful river-based sights, including the largest falls anywhere in Southeast Asia. If you are lucky you might get a close-up view of a Mekong pink dolphin.

The undulating landscapes of this place are bustling with a vast variety of wildlife. The thick envelope of greens provides the much needed habitat for a number of animal species, foremost being the Red Panda. One of the few mystical creatures which reside in the wilds of Laos is one of world’s longest venomous snakes, King Cobra, which measures fourteen foot in length. Along with it, Irrawaddy Dolphins also are found in abundance here

Question:
How important is the Mekong River to the Laos and it's people?

Hi there again!

Welcome back to our ASEAN Blog. Continuing this week is Laos and its culture!

Despite its small population, Laos has 49 ethnic groups, or tribes, from which Lao, Khmou and Hmong constitute approximately three-quarters of the population. Most tribes are small, with some having just a few hundred members. Lao custom dictates that women must wear the distinctive "phaa sin", a long sarong available in many regional patterns, however many ethnic minorities have their own clothing styles.

Though Laos is among the poorest countries of the world, the people here have found the way to happiness by accepting Buddhism as their major religion. Buddhism helps them in finding joy in simple living. Laos is officially Buddhist, and the national symbol, the gilded stupa of Pha That Luang, has replaced the hammer and sickle even on the state seal.

Most of these people live in hamlets which are situated by the rivers. The main occupation here is agriculture. The people of Laos are known around the world for their honesty and simplicity, mainly the followers of Buddhism, these people have discovered joy in minimalism.

Question:
What are some of the fun sports and past times that the Laos enjoy?

Hello readers!

Welcome back to our ASEAN Blog. Our final 2 weeks is upon us and so far we've already covered 8 ASEAN member countries in the past 2 months
and I hope I've started some interests and some conversations about these amazing countries. Rounding off this week is the enchanted Laos!

In the year 1779, most parts of Laos were annexed by the Siamese (now Thai) people. But later the French colonists took control of this country and forcefully removed the Siamese off the Western part of the Mekong River. The fragments were reunited by the French into a country they now named that is Laos.

Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, sharing its borders with Burma, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. And because of being landlocked, Laos does not have a navy.
For Laos has its own simple but unique culture which has attracted, tourists and travellers alike, from the time immemorial. This place is enthralling and abundant with unending natural landscapes. The setting is absolutely riveting, backed by its people’s simplicity, makes it a nation worth visiting. It's population is estimated to be around 6.5 million.

Question:
What was the date and year Laos was added as an ASEAN member?

Hi there!
Finishing off this week is Cambodia's fascinating culture.

Cambodia has an estimated population of 14,805,358 people. Ninety percent of Cambodia's population is of Khmer origin and speak the Khmer language, the country's official language.
Its minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Cham, and Khmer Loeu. Many younger Cambodians and those in the business-class have favoured learning English.
Khmer culture, as developed and spread by the Khmer empire, has distinctive styles of dance, architecture and sculpture, which have been exchanged with neighbouring Laos and Thailand throughout history.

Bon Om Teuk (Festival of Boat Racing), the annual boat rowing contest, is the most attended Cambodian national festival. Held at the end of the rainy season when the Mekong river begins to sink back to its normal levels allowing the Tonle Sap River to reverse flow, approximately 10% of Cambodia's population attends this event each year to play games, give thanks to the moon, watch fireworks, dine, and attend the boat race in a carnival-type atmosphere. Popular games include cockfighting, soccer, and kicking a sey, which is similar to a footbag.

Question:
In Cambodia you will have no problem paying for things using US dollars or Thai baht. However, what is the official currency of Cambodia?

Hello All!
Whats the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Cambodia?
That's right… the Angkor Archaeological Park!

Stretching over some 400 square kilometres, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of several capitals of
the Khmer Empire of the 9th to the 15th centuries, including the largest pre-industrial city in the world. The most famous are the Temple of Angkor Wat.
The temple was built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura, the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum.

The temple is a powerful symbol of Cambodia, and is a source of great national pride that has factored into Cambodia's diplomatic relations with France, the United States and its neighbour Thailand. A depiction of Angkor Wat has been a part of Cambodian national flags since the introduction of the first version circa 1863.

Since the 1990s, Angkor Wat has seen continued conservation efforts and a massive increase in tourism. The temple is part of the Angkor World Heritage Site, established in 1992, which has provided some funding and has encouraged the Cambodian government to protect the site.

Question:
In the large temple of Angkor Wat, north of Siem Reap, what do the five main towers represent?

Greetings!
Welcome back to our ASEAN Blog. All this week we will be talking about Cambodia.
Let's Go!

Cambodia or Khmer or Kampuchea, is officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia. The official religion is Theravada Buddhism, which is practiced by approximately 95% of the Cambodian population. The country's minority groups include Vietnamese,Chinese, Chams and 30 hill tribes. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, the political, economic, and cultural center of Cambodia. From 2004 to 2008, the economy grew about 10% per year, driven largely by an expansion in the garment sector, construction, agriculture, and tourism.

Cambodia's security situations has improved immeasurably, and increasing numbers of visitors are rediscovering Cambodia's temples and beaches. Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor, now sports luxury hotels, chic nightspots, ATMs, and an airport fielding flights from all over the region, while Sihanoukville is getting good press as an up-and-coming beach destination. However travel beyond the most popular tourist destinations is still an adventure.

Question:
What is the approximate population for Cambodia and ranked in the world?

Hi everyone!
For our last ASEAN Blog this week on Burma (Myanmar), we will cover it's educational system.

The educational system of Burma is operated by the government agency, the Ministry of Education. Universities and professional institutes from upper Burma and lower Burma are run by two separate entities,
the Department of Higher Education of Upper Burma and the Department of Higher Education of Lower Burma. Both headquarters are based in Yangon and Mandalay respectively.
The education system is based on the United Kingdom's system, due to nearly a century of British and Christian presences in Burma.

Although nearly all schools are government operated, but there has been a recent increase in privately funded English language schools.
Schooling is compulsory until the end of elementary school, probably about 9 years old, while the compulsory schooling age is 15 or 16 at international level.
There are 101 universities, 12 institutes, 9 degree colleges and 24 colleges in Burma, a total of 146 higher education institutions.

Question:
What was the date and year when Burma (Myanmar) joined ASEAN?

Hello again!
Welcome back to our informative ASEAN Blog and continuing this week with the enchanted Burma (Myanmar) and it's culture!

You will encounter men wearing skirt-like longyi, women smothered in thanakha (traditional make-up) and betel-chewing grannies with mouths full of blood-red juice, and that’s just the first 10 minutes of your arrival!

A diverse range of indigenous cultures exist in Burma, but the majority culture is primarily Buddhist and Bamar. This is apparent in its language, cuisine, music, dance and theatre.
The arts, particularly literature, have historically been influenced by the local form of Theravada Buddhism.
British colonial rule also introduced Western elements of culture to Burma. Burma's educational system is modelled after that of the United Kingdom.
Colonial architectural influences are most evident in major cities such as Yangon!

Question:
What is on the Burmese people's faces?
