Lunar New Year celebrations in Thailand

Across Thailand, Lunar New Year is expressed in distinctly local ways—from Bangkok’s Chinatown atmosphere to large-scale provincial processions and heritage-focused “old town” celebrations.

An estimated 14% of Thailand’s 66 million population are of Chinese descent, a result of a long history of Chinese immigration into Thailand. In the fourteenth century, Chinese merchants were prominent in the state of Ayutthaya before becoming established in Bangkok. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Chinese workers were encouraged to come to the kingdom to supplement the native workforce. More recent Thai history has seen a clampdown on immigration from China, but the Chinese influence remains strong in certain areas of Thailand. Wats and Chinese temples are busy in some areas of Thailand with people making merit and wishing for good luck in the forthcoming year.

Although it’s never been an official holiday in Thailand, Lunar New Year is celebrated throughout the country and not just by those who can claim Chinese heritage. Some restaurants and businesses in certain areas (such as Bangkok’s Chinatown) may close, but elsewhere it will be business as usual. Visitors to Thailand during Chinese New Year can expect to hear plenty of firecrackers going off. You will also notice that many Thai people wear red and hand out ang pao (red money packets).

Lunar New Year in Thailand has become a living part of the country’s cultural rhythm—rooted in long historical connections and strengthened by a modern Thai–China relationship that continues to shape Thailand’s diplomacy, economy, and everyday social life.

1. Establish its purpose

Putting on an event purely for the sake of it is the quickest way to lose engagement from your attendees. Even if you don’t have the sharpest idea in mind, you’ll need to refine this in the early stages, as a lot of other elements will fall into place afterwards. Do you want to motivate staff? Facilitate team building? Or discuss new trends? Once you’ve decided, it’ll be easier to devise a strategy and book relevant speakers.

2.Assemble the best team

When organising any event, there are seemingly endless boxes to tick – and conferences are no exception. To ensure every part of the planning happens smoothly and successfully, you’ll want a team with experience in the area they’re delegated. For example, you’ll need people dedicated to planning, who’ll book the venue, accommodation and catering; administration, including budgeting and ticket sales; and marketing, for the promotional materials and platforms.

Or you can hire an event company that does it all for you! As your dedicated conference organiser, D2I Global guarantees your conference is one for the history books, with zero stress.

3. Choose the right venue

There’s no such thing as a one size fits all conference venue. To choose the ideal venue, you’ll first need an idea of conference size and budget, amongst other factors. Some options you could look at include university campuses, which tend to be the cheapest but also relatively small, or hotels, which often have state-of-the-art conference facilities and the added bonus of nearby accommodation, but can be pricier. There are also plenty of independent venues which are dedicated to conference hosting.

Whichever you choose, check the proximity of transport and accommodation, as well as any catering options and availability of resources like WiFi and audio-visual equipment. D2I Global is ready to assist with this. In fact, we’ll find your venue as part of the package.

4. Create a captivating stage design

Effective stage design will ensure your conference is perfectly on brand, and it ties back into your demonstrating the purpose of your event. Most importantly, it catches and retains your audience’s attention, enhancing their enjoyment of your event.

To achieve this, create an aesthetically-pleasing backdrop that lends itself to any audio-visual effects, consider relevant props and drapery, and use lighting to your advantage.

5. Make it interactive

Again, engaging your audience is the main way to take your conference from zero to hero. Games, challenges and quizzes will keep attendees switched on and involved. It’ll also get them talking with whoever they’re sat near, which boosts networking and team-building opportunities.

"BEST TIME TO VISIT THAILAND:
Thinking of hosting an event or traveling to Thailand next year? Let us guide you to the best season for an unforgettable experience.
While you’re sure to love Thailand all year round, it’s important to consider how the weather will impact your plans for travelling in Thailand. Thailand’s hot season, rainy season, and dry season all bring a different.

Hot Season: March - June Thailand’s hot season runs from March to June, and this is also the shoulder season. Many people who aren’t acclimatised to warm weather find the hot season just too hot, so prefer to travel during other seasons. The hot season in Thailand is perfect for beach days and pure relaxation, as it’s probably too hot to do much else! Be prepared to sweat if you visit in this season, as the humidity is seriously intense. Don’t even think about make-up, it’ll just slide off!

Rainy Season: July - October Rainy season in Thailand comes between July and October and makes it the low season. While you’ll likely have to contend with frequent rainstorms, you’ll
benefit from less tourists and reduced rates. If the rain doesn’t bother you, this may be the perfect time to visit Thailand as you’ll be able to get on with your activities without the crowds of people.
It’s still warm at this time of year, and heavy downpours can be good fun. Dancing in the rain is a must.

Dry Season: November - February the dry season in Thailand is between November and February, and is also the high season. Many people prefer the slightly milder temperatures of this time of year, as it means they’ll be able to get stuck in with activities like hiking and swimming in the sea. As this is the most popular time to travel, attractions will likely be busy. It also means that flights and accommodation will be more expensive than in the hot season or rain"
