Escaped the madness of Songkran in Chiang Mai and spent Thai new year with our friends at Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary. It was such a treat to spend time at a true sanctuary that is so integrated into the local community.

They are still rebuilding from last year’s devastating floods so please support them if you can.

On an old stupa in Arukharka village rests a relief of the Three Great Bodhisattvas.

Manjushri represents wisdom, Avalokiteshvara - compassion, and Vajrapani - power.

The abilities of each are amplified by the others’. Without wisdom and compassion, power can be heartless. Without compassion and power, wisdom may be meaningless. And without power and wisdom, compassion would be fruitless.

The Lords of the Three Worlds are central to Vajrayana or Tibetan Buddhist practice. Supporting our friends in Arukharka with the reconstruction of their monastery inspires us keep these principles in mind throughout all of our work.

Snapshots from Long Lao village - a community excited to share its traditions.

On your trip you’ll have the chance to share locally-grown meals with your host family, visit the shaman, learn embroidery, and hike with Mr. Kua to the world-famous Kuang Si Falls - all while supporting the construction of the new community center.

This experience is completely led by community members and we’re so excited to help them bring guests to support their village.

Happy to announce that work has begun on a new community center in Ban Long Lao!

Last year we mentioned our partnership with our good friend and community chief, Mr. Kua - two months ago we were finally able to provide the first round of funding, and two days ago we were able to see the amazing work that’s been accomplished so far.

If you’d like to learn how to support this project, then stay tuned! We’ve just launched a new trip based in Long Lao organized by Kua with the proceeds going directly to finishing the center.

“But Mitria,” you might ask, “why are you building a community center and launching trips when you don’t even have a website?”

For the past few months, we’ve had the pleasure of supporting the community on Koh Klang with their work to restore the island’s coastal mangrove population.

After much of Koh Klang’s mangrove forest was destroyed for development, the community watched as the island’s coastline rapidly eroded away and wildlife disappeared. Recently, they’ve taken it upon themselves to try and reverse the damage and restore the local ecosystems.

Through the community’s Regenerate Koh Klang Project, student volunteers learned from local leaders about the importance of these habitats and helped plant dozens of mangrove seedlings in barren areas previously cleared for construction.

We’re excited to see how the community’s impact will grow and proud to support their incredible work in a small way.

Two days ago, we headed out to Ban Long Lao, a Hmong community outside of Luang Prabang, to talk with our friend Mr. Kua Vue about our planned partnership there.

As one of the community chiefs, he’s looking for new ways to support the village, and we’re glad to be working with him on a new project that will hopefully do just that. Stay tuned for ways to join us soon!

And yes, those are all his children.
