Doi Suthep at night with Doi Suthep viewpoint
History
Built in 1926 during the reign of Phraya Kuena the Great and received the royal charter of the boundary in 2010. According to the legend about Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, during the reign of Phraya Kuena, the sixth king of the Mangrai Dynasty (reigned 1898 - 1928), who was very devoted to Buddhism, he ordered the construction of a pagoda on Doi Suthep. He invited Phra Maha Sumana Thera from Sukhothai to preach the religion in Chiang Mai. At that time, Phra Maha Sumana Thera brought the Buddha's relics with him. Phraya Kuena was very devoted and ordered a bathing ceremony for the relics so that they could be enshrined in the stupa of Wat Buppharam. While the bathing ceremony was being performed, the relics split into two parts. Phraya Kuena and Phra Maha Swami Sumana agreed to The ceremony to enshrine the new relics was held at Wat Suan Dok, while the original relics were enshrined at Doi Suthep.
The ceremony began by inviting the relics to be placed on the white elephant, the auspicious elephant, and then praying to release the royal elephant. If the relics wished to be placed somewhere, the auspicious elephant would stop there.
During the journey, the auspicious elephant stopped three times, giving rise to the names Doi Chang Nun and Doi Ngam. The third time was considered important because the auspicious elephant climbed the mountain to the top of Doi Wasuthep and roared so loud that it reverberated throughout the mountain. After walking around it three times, it knelt down and immediately after inviting the relics to be removed from its back, the auspicious elephant fell down and died immediately, which meant that it would not be anyone’s vehicle again.
This Wat Umong (Suan Phutthatham) is considered one of the earliest temples in Chiang Mai because it was built during the reign of King Mangrai, the first king of Lanna. However, at that time, it was not called Wat Umong because its earliest name was ‘Wat Welukattharam’ or ‘Wat Pai Sip Et Ko’ because the temple was located in a bamboo forest at the foot of Doi Suthep, the sacred mountain of Chiang Mai. Later, during the reign of King Kuena, he invited Phra Maha Thera Chan, a monk whom he highly respected because he was an expert in Dhamma, to ordain him. He originally resided at another temple in the city, Wat Umong. However, Phra Maha Thera Chan later became unstable and came to ordain at this temple instead. Not only that, he also built a meditation center that looked like a tunnel at this temple, causing Wat Pai Sip Et Ko to change its name to ‘Wat Umong’.
