Important Alert Test for Mobile Phones in Chiang Mai
Following increased public interest in rapid disaster warnings after the recent earthquake in Myanmar, the Thai Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) will conduct a nationwide test of the "Cell Broadcast" emergency alert system. This will be the first nationwide test of this system in Thailand.
For residents of Chiang Mai province, this test is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at approximately 13:00 (1 PM). Please be aware that all districts within Chiang Mai province will participate in this test simultaneously.
What will happen during the test?
When the alert is triggered:
* A warning message will appear directly on your smartphone screen.
* Your phone will emit an alarm sound and vibrate for about 8 seconds.
Important Information for Users with Older Phones:
If you are using a device older than Android 11 or iOS 18, or a phone that only supports 2G/3G networks, your device will not be able to receive the Cell Broadcast alert. In these cases, you will receive the test message via SMS (short message). This SMS will be sent even if your phone is turned off or is in airplane mode.
Protect Yourself from Scams:
It is crucial to be vigilant for fraudulent messages that may try to mimic these disaster alerts. Please remember that genuine "Cell Broadcast" messages will not contain any website links (URLs). If you receive a message with a link, it is highly likely to be a scam, and you should never click on it.
What will the test message say?
The official test message will read something similar to this:
> Testing the Cell Broadcast Alert from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Relief (PPO). ) Plz Don't panic
> This is a test message from Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). No action required.
