Kayan Long-Neck People

The people you see here are known as the Kayan, particularly the Kayan Lahwi subgroup. They are an ethnic group traditionally associated with Myanmar, especially the Kayah, or Karenni, State.

One of the most distinctive traditions of Kayan women is wearing brass neck rings. Traditionally, girls may begin wearing the rings when they are young, and additional rings can be added as they grow older.

Although they are often called “Long-Neck Karen,” the neck itself does not actually become longer. The weight and pressure of the brass coils gradually push down the shoulders and collarbone area, making the neck appear longer.

The tradition is closely connected to Kayan identity and beauty. However, not every Kayan woman wears neck rings today. Some women choose to continue the tradition, while others do not.

The Kayan people also have their own language, traditional clothing, weaving, handicrafts, music, and cultural traditions.

For many Kayan communities, traditional crafts and tourism have become important sources of income. So when visiting a Kayan village, tourists can support the local community by purchasing locally made handicrafts and interacting respectfully with the people.



It's important to remember that these are not simply people with a “long neck.” They are a living ethnic community with their own history, culture, language, and traditions.
