Earthquake Risk Zones in Thailand — What Investors Should Know
If you're planning to buy land in Thailand, understanding natural disaster risks is just as important as finding the perfect location.
Here’s a breakdown of the areas with the highest earthquake risk:
1. Northern Region – Highest seismic activity in the country, especially:
Chiang Rai (magnitude 6.3 in 2014)
Chiang Mai
Phayao
Mae Hong Son
Lampang
2. Western Region – Along the Myanmar border:
Tak
Kanchanaburi
Ratchaburi
3. Upper Southern Region – Along the Ranong Fault Line:
Surat Thani (southern parts only)
Note:
While Bangkok and parts of the Eastern Seaboard (Chonburi, Rayong) are not located directly on major fault lines, they may still feel tremors from larger quakes in nearby regions.
The Northeastern Region, including areas like Phetchabun and Sakon Nakhon, has minor fault lines but lower risk overall.
Summary:
To minimize risk, it may be best to avoid investing in land located in:
Chiang Rai
Chiang Mai
Phayao
Mae Hong Son
Kanchanaburi
Tak
