Watch closely. 🐘🌿💚

Did you spot it straight away or have to watch it a few times to see it?

There is so much beauty in simply observing elephants and letting them live free from tourist interaction. Watch till the end to see the quiet moments you’d otherwise miss. 🐘💚

Today is World Elephant Day 🌎🐘💚

A day dedicated to raising awareness. But for us at Following Giants, protecting elephants is a three-stage journey built on the 3 Rs.

Swipe through to see this through Motif’s story, from her life before rescue to welcoming her calf, Monty-Aaron, at our sanctuary.

🐘 Rescue
Many of us deeply care for elephants, yet traditional tourism often encourages close human contact and entertainment that treats these intelligent animals as business assets. Rescue is the vital first step to breaking that cycle and removing them from demanding working environments.

💚 Rehabilitation
Once at our sanctuary, the healing process begins. Elephants need time and space to remember how to simply be elephants, away from human pressure and control. True rehabilitation means stepping back and allowing them to heal physically and mentally from their past.

🌎 Raise Awareness
The final stage is championing observation-only tourism. By choosing hands-off experiences with no riding, shows, or direct tourist contact, travellers hold the power to shape a kinder future for elephants everywhere.

If you would like to help us in our mission toward supporting Thailand’s captive elephants, there are a few ways you can get involved—whether that is sharing this post to spread the word, adopting an elephant, gifting a food care package, or exploring our merchandise.

All options are linked in our bio. Thank you for standing with us. 💚🐘🌎

Monty-Aaron is growing fast, but his first day of life is a memory we want to hold on to forever. Today, we are incredibly proud to launch a Limited Edition collection inspired by the very first moments of little Monty-Aaron’s life, captured under the protective watch of his mum, Motif.

To bring this special release to life, we’ve collaborated with our friends for love of all things. 🐘💚

This exclusive artwork is available on T-shirts, Vests, and Hoodies. But don’t wait—these pieces are only available for a limited period.

🌍 Global shipping is available and a huge range of colours and sizes.

Best of all, every purchase makes a direct impact. $8 from every t-shirt sold goes directly to supporting the ongoing care of Motif and little Monty-Aaron.

This may look like a simple video of an elephant bathing, but when you know the history behind it, you realise just how significant this moment truly is. 🐘💚

Tiny, who spent his entire life working in the logging industry, living solely among the trees with no exposure to tourism. Because of his background, he was initially reluctant to drink from man-made water outlets or swim in pools. That is why, in 2025, we relocated him to our Lanta sanctuary to give him a larger forest and completely natural streams. Look at him now, he loves nothing more than taking the weight off his feet by lying in the stream while his mahout helps clean the areas the running water cannot reach, completely relaxed with nearby onlookers.

Then there is Pimpa, who arrived in September 2025 utterly terrified of all other elephants. Though she has only recently started making strong connections with Motif and Monty-Aaron, watch her in this video choose to cross the path of Tiny right there in the stream. No longer running away in fear, she shows a little hesitation, but ultimately chooses to walk right past him.

This is another huge, beautiful step forward in her incredible journey of recovery, and we simply had to share these milestones with you all. 💚🐘💚

Here is another instalment of our ele-vision to brighten up your weekend. 🐘💚

Watch as proud mum Motif and her mischievous little shadow, Monty-Aaron, head out to explore together.

Every single moment is a new lesson for Monty-Aaron, who is using the opportunity to test out those growing trunk skills and figure out how this world works.

Happy Saturday. 💚🐘

Turn your volume up and feel (as well as hear) our Krabi herd communicating. 🔈

If you caught our video earlier in the week of our elephants splashing about in the pool, here is what happened next.

Once everyone finally decided to leave the water, things got very noisy. 🐘🔈

The whole herd started trumpeting and vocalising. Whilst it sounds incredible, you can see our mahouts closely monitoring the group to ensure everything is completely normal, just natural communication within the herd.

Make sure your sound is up and experience it for yourself. 💚🐘

Ever dreamed of spending your days in the heart of nature, making a real difference? 🐘💚

At Following Giants, we believe that the best way to experience the majesty of elephants is through observation. As a high welfare, no-touch sanctuary on the beautiful island of Koh Lanta, we invite you to step away from the traditional tourist trail and join our family for a week of discovery and connection.

Our week long programme offers a truly behind-the-scenes immersive experience, giving you a unique look at what it actually takes to care for our rescued elephants.

During your time with us, you’ll:
🌿 Get hands-on: From crafting herbal medicine balls and food supplements to making eco-friendly seedballs and 'poo paper', you’ll learn the intricacies of captive elephant care.
🍳 Immerse yourself: Enjoy local Thai cooking classes and learn about the vibrant culture that surrounds our sanctuary.
🐘 Witness their recovery: Spend each day observing our rescued herd as they thrive in a natural environment, guided by the expert care of their devoted mahouts.
🤝 Become part of the family: As a small, Thai family-run sanctuary, our guests aren't just visitors—you’ll be part of our team, helping us sustain a brighter future for these gentle giants.

Whether you’re looking to gain insight into conservation or simply want to reconnect with nature in a profound, ethical way, we’d love to welcome you.

Programmes are limited to ensure a personal and meaningful experience for everyone. Find out more and book your place via our website: https://www.followinggiants.net/volunteering

Who says observing elephants is boring? We think the absolute opposite. 🐘💚

Some might wonder if hands-off, observation-only care takes the excitement away. Not a chance. In fact, we have absolute proof that watching our elephants live their best lives is pure joy for everyone here.

Keep watching... It isn’t just our guests who love seeing our giants having the time of their lives. We recently caught some of our mahouts and one of our Krabi guides getting completely caught up in the magic happening in the pool. 💚🐘

Who else could watch them splash around all day?

We are often asked how we manage to identify our elephants so easily. 🐘 Whilst they might all look alike at first glance, every single one of them has completely unique features.

Here’s how our team tells them apart:
👁️ Distinctive features: We look at ear shapes, eye shapes and sizes, and even how long or hairy their tails are.
🐘 Unique markings: Pink pigmentation develops as they age, and males often have tusks.
💚 Life history: Many elephants carry scars or signs of their past, such as damage to their ears or missing parts of their tail.
🐘Body shape: Variations in height, skull shape, and torso roundness always give them away—whilst they are cleverly hiding in the forest!

How well do you really know our Koh Lanta herd? Can you guess who's who?

Wan Mai carries the heavy physical toll of a difficult past, but she is a determined lady.

When Wan Mai first arrived at our sanctuary, the transition was overwhelming. Trusting our team didn’t come easily after everything she had been through. Through endless patience and gentle care, she finally let her new mahout near her. Today, her mahout is much more than a carer; he is her companion and shadow.

While her body is aging and showing the wear of her past hardships, maintaining a healthy weight remains an ongoing daily challenge. Years of a poor diet have left her teeth heavily worn, making it difficult for her to chew and properly digest the essential nutrients she desperately needs. To keep her strong, our team prepares a specialised menu for her, featuring soft pellet food, extra fresh fruit, and specially crafted vitamin balls tailored to her needs.

Of course, like most elephants, Wan Mai has an undeniable sweet tooth. She adores sugarcane, and even though it can be a bit of a challenge for her to eat, nothing stops her from enjoying it. We recently caught Wan Mai and her mahout at reception where she helped herself to a piece of her favourite treat.

It is impossible not to smile watching her determination to enjoy life’s simple pleasures, even as her aging body asks a little extra of her.

Please help us support incredible elephants like Wan Mai. By purchasing a Food Care Package for 680 Baht (approx. $20 USD) on our website, you directly help us cover the high daily costs of specialised food, supplements, and tailored care that keep our rescues healthy and thriving.
