As dawn broke, our team set out for the area where we hoped to find our target species. The journey itself was an adventure, requiring nearly 2 hours of driving along winding mountain roads that cut through deep valleys and rugged terrain.
Along the way, we passed through a remote "Lawa" tribal village, offering a glimpse into a way of life that has remained closely connected to the mountains for generations. Walking is still the primary mode of transportation for many villagers, with baskets and supplies often carried on their heads. Traditional homes dot the landscape, and nearly 95 % of households continue to rely on firewood for daily cooking, reflecting a lifestyle deeply rooted in the natural environment.
Our hike began at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters above sea level. The destination lay on a mountain summit rising to around 2,100 meters. Although the distance appeared manageable on paper, the terrain quickly revealed its true challenge. The trail climbed relentlessly through steep forested slopes, and in several sections the incline was so severe that hands were needed as much as feet, turning the ascent into an almost four-limbed scramble.
After nearly 2 hours of steady climbing through the montane wilderness, anticipation grew with every step. The question remained: would the mountain reveal the species we had come so far to find?
