According to legend, a 14th-century woman named Penh found sacred Buddhist objects in the nearby river and placed them here on the small hill. A temple named Wat Phnom was built to house the relics and the city was named for it as Phnom Penh (Penh's Hill) !

Standing as the capital’s only hill, this well-manicured park offers welcome respite from the capital’s heat. Wat Phnom pagoda and its intricately-detailed temple sits atop and welcomes visitors warmly!

It is a standard Southeast Asian wat, with a bell-shaped chedi and Naga snakes decorating the corners of the roof!

Inside the temple sits a large bronze Buddha, the walls covered by paintings that tell his story, and murals that recount the Reamker, the Khmer version of the Ramayana!

Just outside Tay Nihn and 60 miles northwest of Ho Chi Minh City is the Great Temple or Holy See, the center of the intriguing Cao Dai sect!

Cao Dai is a syncretist Vietnamese religious movement that incorporates aspect of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and even Catholicism. Caodaists believe that all religions are ultimately the same and seek to promote tolerance throughout the world!

The exterior and interior of the Cao Dai Temple are both extravagantly decorated, incorporating symbols, abstract designs and images of saints!

The main focal point is a Divine Eye symbolising God which has the Ying and Yang icon in its pupil!

Prayers are conducted four times daily in the Great Temple. It’s worth visiting during one of these prayer sessions!
