YOUR DAY MANGROVES TRIP.

Some 130 kilometers South of Bangkok in the town of Phetchaburi the Phra Nakhon Khiri historical park has a dominant presence in the area. On top of an almost 100 meter high hill, Phra Nakhon Khiri overlooks the area and can be seen from far away approaching the city.
King Mongkut (Rama IV) loved this area so much, he decided to build a summer Palace here to be used as a Royal retreat when visiting the area. The Palace named Phra Nakhon Khiri, which is also known as Khao Wang meaning mountain with the Palace, was completed in 1860.
In 1979 the Palace was declared a historical park, where the Fine Arts Department has an exhibition of personal items of King Rama IV and King Rama V on display, including ceramics from a number of foreign countries.
The historical park comprises of Palaces, Temples, Royal Halls, pagodas, chedis and other buildings and is spread out over three hill peaks. Some of the buildings are in classical Thai style, while others are greatly influenced by European neo classical or Chinese style.

The historical park is actually spread out on three peaks, the Western peak being the one where the Royal Palace and the museum are located. If you take the cable car to the top you arrive at the Western peak. From here it is a pleasant walk to the two other peaks.

Western peak
King Mongkut’s Palace is located on the Western peak. One of the most important buildings here is the Phra Thi Nang Phet Phum Phairot Throne Hall, which is the largest building of the Palace.
The King had his personal living quarters in this building as well, like a bedroom, a dining room and a dressing room. The rooms and the Royal personal items in them give a great impression of how the Thai Royals lived back then.
Another important building is the Phra Thi Nang Pramot Mahaisawan, that is believed to have been used as the Queens Royal bedchamber.
The Phra Thi Nang Wetchayan Prasat was used for worshipping, and has the form of a prang, a building style originally used in Khmer architecture originating from Cambodia.The Ho Chatchawan Wiang Chai is a tower used by King Mongkut as an observatory. The King was very interested in science, innovation and astronomy and was known as “the Father of Thai science”. Apart from these, there is a number of smaller buildings used as stables, quarters for the guards and servants and a kitchen. The Palace was protected by a fort on each corner of the complex.

Central peak
The Central peak holds a 40 meter high white chedi, called Phra That Chom Phet. This chedi is believed to contain relics of the Buddha. This peak is a great place to view the Royal Palaces on the Western peak and the Wat Phra Kaew Temple on the Eastern peak.

Eastern peak
The Eastern peak is where the Wat Phra Kaew Temple is located. It was built in the same style, but smaller, as the Wat Phra Kaew Temple in the Grand Palace in Bangkok (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and is therefore in classical Thai architectural style. Of all the caves in Phetchaburi province, Khao Luang is the most important and best visited, because of the large number of Buddha images found inside the cave, including a meters high Buddha image cast by order of King Rama V.
The impressive caves are set in Khao Luang hill which is almost 100 meters high, just North of Petchaburi town. They consist of a number of caverns filled with beautifully illuminated golden Buddha images, several chedis and a great number of stalactites hanging from the ceiling.
King Mongkut (Rama IV) who reigned the Kingdom from 1851 until 1868 used the cave to study Buddhism and to meditate. He had a large number of Buddha images placed in the Khao Luang cave.

His successor to the throne, King Chulalongkorn ordered a large 4 meter high Buddha image be made and placed in the cave dedicated to Kings Rama III and Rama IV. He also had a number of older Buddha images restored.
The atmosphere inside the cave is serene and quiet, Buddhist people will pay respect to the Buddha images burning candles and incense sticks.
There are about 170 Buddha images in Khao Luang cave. One of the most beautiful is a huge reclining Buddha image, symbolizing the passing of the Buddha into final Nirvana.
The rays of the sun shining through holes of the ceiling of the caves illuminates the cave chambers, giving the gold colored Buddha images a mystical appearance. Apart from the Buddha images and chedis, you will find stalactites hanging from the caves ceiling, formed over the centuries by dripping water.
An old local legend tells that the caves were once inhabited by young women only.

The caves are accessed through a paved stairs close to the parking lot. Up the road to the cave and in front of the cave itself are groups of monkeys waiting for visitors to give them food. If you like to feed them, you can buy food at one of the stalls in front of the cave. Take care of your belongings though, the monkeys are very cheeky and might go after your bag if they think there is food in it.
At the foot of the hill is a large temple complex called Wat Bunthawi, also called Wat Tham Klaep.

Less known to tourists than Khao Luang Cave, this place may not be as spectacular as the view of the vast body of the cave but much more ambitious and interesting.
Another advantage is simply that in this place you will almost certainly end up alone here.
Tourists are rare among the admirers of Eastern traditions, to perform meditation in the caves of the desert and rest room.
The entire complex includes the construction of the temple and several old stupas.
Great, but still incomplete, a giant Buddha statue sitting on top of the hill.
The rather large cave is composed of many rooms filled with Buddha statues, some rooms are designed for meditation.
And in one of the branches of live bats.
