Everything I ate in Kraków…
I absolutely loved the food in Kraków. We were determined to try plenty of traditional Polish food and I think we did a pretty good job.
First up – pierogi. We had them in Szeroka na Kazimierzu, right in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, close to the synagogues. We tried different varieties, some boiled and some fried, with different fillings - both sweet & savoury. I genuinely don’t think I met a pierogi I didn’t like.
Then came my absolute favourite restaurant of the whole trip – U Babci Maliny, which roughly translates as “Grandma Raspberry’s”. We found it opposite the theatre and it was just gorgeous. The atmosphere was magical, especially when the pianist started playing.
We ordered loads of traditional dishes so we could try a bit of everything. More pierogi, obviously, traditional soup served inside a huge loaf of bread, beetroot, meat and potato dishes… the table was absolutely covered. The food was unreal. I would genuinely return to Kraków just to go back to this restaurant.
We also had a chimney cake. I thought these were Polish because you see them all over Kraków, but apparently they’re actually Hungarian/Transylvanian. Still counts because I ate it in Kraków! Warm, sugary and chocolatey – the kids thought they were great. I found them a big messy to eat.
Then on our final morning we went for a much simpler breakfast – croissants with different spreads and hot drinks, including Dubai hot chocolate, before heading home.
Kraków is definitely a city to visit hungry. The food was hearty, filling, really good value and trying all the traditional dishes was one of my favourite parts of the trip.
What Polish food have I missed that I need to try next time?
