Tunisia Named Arab Tourism Capital for 2027 at Regional Ministerial Summit in Baghdad
Baghdad, December 9, 2025 — Tunisia has been officially elected the Arab Tourism Capital for 2027, following a unanimous decision by the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism during its 28th session held in Baghdad. The announcement marks a significant recognition of Tunisia’s cultural heritage, natural diversity, and growing leadership in the regional tourism sector.
The designation comes as part of an initiative by the Arab League to highlight outstanding destinations that demonstrate excellence in hospitality, sustainable tourism development, and the preservation of cultural identity. The 2025 ministerial meeting gathered representatives from across the Arab world, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and promoting tourism as a key driver of economic growth.
A Landmark Achievement for Tunisia
In their official statement, council members praised Tunisia’s rich historical legacy, spanning from the ancient civilization of Carthage to the architectural treasures of the Arab-Islamic era. They also highlighted the country’s unique geographical diversity — from Mediterranean coastlines and lush forests to the majestic dunes of the Sahara.
Tunisia’s continuous efforts to modernize its tourism infrastructure and expand into new markets were cited among the reasons for its selection.
Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts of Tunisia welcomed the decision, describing it as “a national honor and a strategic opportunity to showcase Tunisia’s unique identity to the Arab world and the international community.” He emphasized that the 2027 title aligns with Tunisia’s long-term vision of promoting high-quality, sustainable, and diversified tourism.
A Country of Culture, Nature, and Hospitality
Tunisia has long been recognized as one of the most accessible and welcoming tourist destinations in the region. Its medinas, archaeological sites, and coastal towns attract millions of visitors each year, while its festivals, cuisine, and artisan traditions continue to reinforce its cultural appeal.
The country is also emerging as a hub for film tourism, with the Sahara locations of Tozeur and Nefta serving as iconic shooting sites for major international productions. Adventure tourism, wellness resorts, digital nomad programs, and eco-tourism initiatives are further strengthening Tunisia’s global standing.
Preparing for 2027: A National Mobilization
As the designated Arab Tourism Capital for 2027, Tunisia is expected to host a series of regional and international events, including conferences, cultural exhibitions, and promotional campaigns aimed at positioning the country as a leading destination for Arab travelers.
Government agencies, private-sector partners, and local communities are anticipated to collaborate closely to ensure a successful and impactful program.
Early plans include enhancing tourism services, improving connectivity, and highlighting lesser-known regions of the country such as the northwest highlands, the island of Djerba, and the inland oases of the southwest.
A Message to the World
Tunisia’s selection comes at a time when global tourism is witnessing a strong recovery. The title of Arab Tourism Capital presents an occasion for the country to reaffirm its role as a bridge between Africa, the Arab world, and Europe.
“This is not only a recognition of Tunisia’s past,” the Ministry’s spokesperson said, “but also a celebration of its future. We invite travelers from across the world to discover a nation of beauty, history, and generosity.”
With the countdown to 2027 underway, Tunisia stands ready to celebrate its multifaceted identity and to welcome visitors with the warmth and openness for which it has always been known.
