The magnificent tomb that first defined the term “mausoleum” was built in Halicarnassus for the Carian satrap Mausolus (d. 353 BCE). Set on a massive podium, this was a monument of incredible grandeur, 45 metres tall and with reliefs on each facade carved by one of the preeminent Greek 4th-century BCE sculptors, Bryaxis, Leochares, Scopas of Paros and Timotheus.

BİTEZ

On holidays to Bitez you can enjoy a laid-back beach break on the Turkish Riviera with historic castles and all-night clubs just down the road.

A village-like feel
Bitez may almost be a suburb of Bodrum Town these days, but it has a very different feel from its boisterous neighbour. Traditional white-washed houses dotted among the tasteful modern hotels, and wooden rowing boats bobbing in the bay, give away the town’s fishing village past. There’s a laid-back vibe here, with most people visiting to laze on the sandy beach or stroll around the cool citrus groves that unfold around the town.

A long crescent of sand
Bitez beach curves around the bay in a kilometre-long crescent of sand and smooth shingle. It’s more sheltered than some spots on the Aegean, with shallow, paddle-friendly waters and a Blue Flag to its name. There’s no charge for sunloungers or parasols and, if you get here early enough, you might even find a free hammock to kick back in.

Daytrips to Bodrum Town
Bodrum Town, a 10-minute drive east of Bitez, is one of the most popular beach resorts on the Aegean. But it’s also a must-visit for history lovers. Not only is it the site of one of the Wonders of the Ancient World – the now-destroyed Mausoleum of Halicarnassus – but it’s also home to the fascinating Museum of Underwater Archaeology, inside St Peter’s Castle on the waterfront. Here you can see ancient treasures recovered from sunken ships, and 2 reconstructed shipwrecks – one dating from the Bronze Age.

GO ON A HORSE TREK
One of the best ways to see the countryside around Turgutreis is from the saddle of one of the well-groomed horses at the Turgutreis Country Ranch, about four kilometres west of the town centre. They’ve got horses for all abilities and sizes – including Shetland ponies for little riders.

BODRUM CARPET
The Empire may have fallen long ago, but Ottoman style has never gone out of fashion. At the Tuesday market you can haggle for bargains on Turkish carpets and jewellery. Kale Caddesi and Ataturk Avenue are good streets for local crafts like leather, bronze and silver jewellery. But if you need a designer fix, the boutiques near the marina feature the likes of Polo and Diesel.

TAKE A BOAT TRIP TO KOS
You can get from nearby Turgutreis over to the Greek island of Kos in about 40 minutes by ferry. You’ll dock in the capital, Kos Town, by the Medieval castle. From here, you’re in the zone to explore the old town, which has a museum and basilica to root around, along with lots of ancient ruins. And come lunchtime, you’ll find plenty of Greek tavernas.

Lording over the seafront, the Castle of St. Peter is at the top of every visitor's things to do in Bodrum list. The Knights Hospitallers of St. John built the structure between 1402 and 1437, and knights of the various nationalities of the order were entrusted with the defense of particular sections of the walls. Among the various towers are the French Tower; English Tower, with a sculpted lion on its west wall; and the Gatineau Tower, which leads to the dungeons.

During the reign of the Ottoman sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, the castle passed into Turkish hands and a mosque was built inside. Today, many of the vast halls inside the castle display the exhibits of Bodrum's Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

Basically a big send-off to the cruising season, the Bodrum Cup is a regatta for local gulets – the wooden boats that zip along the coastline throughout the summer. Watch the comings and goings from the harbour, or put yourself in the thick of things by booking a place on one of the boats. 16-21 october 2021

HITCH A RIDE AT CAMEL BEACH
The clue here is in the name – you’ll spot camels ferrying people from one end of the beach to the other. The so-called 'ships of the desert' aren’t the only things that draw people to this runway of sand around a half-hour drive from Bodrum town, though. Go snorkelling here and you’ll spot ancient ruins on the sea floor.
