🏛️ The Column of Marcus Aurelius: A Timeless Monument in Rome 🇮🇹

Standing proudly in Piazza Colonna, Rome, the Column of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina is an awe-inspiring 2nd-century CE monument, believed to have been erected around 180 CE by Commodus in honor of his father, Marcus Aurelius, and mother, Faustina the Younger.

This column was inspired by Trajan’s Column and features high-relief carvings depicting Marcus Aurelius’ victorious military campaigns against the Quadi beyond the Danube River (172-175 CE). Originally, a statue of the emperor crowned the structure, further increasing its impressive height.

Though it now stands 39 meters tall, historical records suggest its original height reached 51.95 meters (175 Roman feet) when including its lost uppermost elements. A spiral staircase inside the column once led to an upper viewing platform, but its entrance, located on Via del Corso, is now closed to the public.

This hollow marvel of Roman engineering remains a testament to the imperial grandeur of Ancient Rome, marking the city’s enduring connection to its past.
