Newfoundland Caribou Memorial has been erected near Hill 10 CWGC Cemetery at Suvla, where 12 members of the regiment are buried. Among them is Private Hugh McWhirter, the first Newfoundland Regiment soldier died in the First World War.

It seems that the Newfoundland memorial is the first Allied memorial erected on the Gallipoli battlefields since as far back as 1930 when the French cemetery was officially erected. There are four other caribou statues on battlefields of France and Belgium, and one in Canada, that had been built to commemorate Newfoundland's contributions and sacrifices during the war. This is be the sixth one...

Deriving from springs in a cliff almost 200 m high overlooking the plain, calcite-laden waters have created at Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) an unreal landscape, made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins. At the end of the 2nd century B.C. the dynasty of the Attalids, the kings of Pergamon, established the thermal spa of Hierapolis. The ruins of the baths, temples and other Greek and Roman monuments can be seen at the site...

Ephesus is one of the largest and most impressive ancient cities in the world and is one of Türkiye’s most significant ancient cities. It’s cultural and historical significance was highlighted in its addition to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 2015. The remains of the city lie just 80 km inland from the popular seaside city of İzmir and close to the charming towns of Selcuk and Sirince.
Temple of Artemis, Ephesus ancient site, Basilica of St John and House of Virgin Mary are among the places you should visit. Follow us for more...

Pergamon, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2014, has been subjected to invasions and destructions throughout its history, but is one of the settlements that has been permanently inhabited and never lost its historical importance because of its strategic location.
Pergamon city was divided into Upper Acropolis and Lower Acropolis. In the Upper Acropolis, there were the peristyle planned, rich decorated palaces of kings, Temple of Athena, which reflects the Doric architecture of the 4th century BC, the colossal statues of the Roman Emperor Traian and Hadrian and Temple of Traian, with its appealing architectural details. The Library of Pergamon was the most important library in the ancient world, with 200,000 volumes of books stored in rolled paper or as books in which both sides were written (Codex) using the new writing tool Pergamonians pamphlet (Pergamonae Chartae). In fact, the word "parchment" itself is derived from Pergamon because it was a discovery of Pergamonians...

Who were the Trojans?
Iliad was written in Ancient Greek and the names of the characters and the gods were Greek names so it is believed that The Trojans and the Greeks were the same people. But the Trojans spoke an Indo - European language which was widely spoken in different parts of Anatolia, called Luvian.
The Trojans had connections both with east and west. According to the HItite tablets Troy was called WIlusa and the resemblance of the sounds of the names shows and it is believed that they were the native people of Anatolia...

In Greek mythology, the Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Achaeans (Greeks) after Paris of Troy took Helen from her husband Menelaus, king of Sparta. The war is one of the most important events in Greek mythology and has been narrated through many works of Greek literature, most notably Homer's Iliad. The core of the Iliad (Books II – XXIII) describes a period of four days and two nights in the tenth year of the decade-long siege of Troy; the Odyssey describes the journey home of Odysseus, one of the war's heroes. Other parts of the war are described in a cycle of epic poems, which have survived through fragments. Episodes from the war provided material for Greek tragedy and other works of Greek literature, and for Roman poets including Virgil and Ovid.
The ancient Greeks believed that Troy was located near the Dardanelles and that the Trojan War was a historical event of the 13th or 12th century BC, but by the mid-19th century AD, both the war and the city were widely seen as non-historical. In 1868, however, the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann met Frank Calvert, who convinced Schliemann that Troy was a real city at what is now Hisarlik in Turkey.[1] On the basis of excavations conducted by Schliemann and others, this claim is now accepted by most scholars.[2][3]
Whether there is any historical reality behind the Trojan War remains an open question. Many scholars believe that there is a historical core to the tale, though this may simply mean that the Homeric stories are a fusion of various tales of sieges and expeditions by Mycenaean Greeks during the Bronze Age. Those who believe that the stories of the Trojan War are derived from a specific historical conflict usually date it to the 12th or 11th century BC, often preferring the dates given by Eratosthenes, 1194–1184 BC, which roughly correspond to archaeological evidence of a catastrophic burning of Troy VII,[4] and the Late Bronze Age collapse...

The legendary ancient city of Troy, famous for being the site of Trojan War that Homer described in his epic poem The Iliad, is one of the ancient cities where the richest archaeological findings of Anatolia are located. With its history dating back to 3000 BC, Troy is one of the most famous archaeological sites of the world. The ruins of Troy at Hisarlık, Turkey, are a key archaeological site whose many layers illustrate the gradual development of civilization in northwestern Asia Minor. The extensive and complex ruins are open to visitors, and there is a museum on the site. There is much potential for future excavations. The ruins of Troy were enrolled as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998...

The cemetery was named from the 7th Australian Field Ambulance, which landed on Gallipoli in September 1915, but over 350 of the graves were brought in from earlier cemeteries after the Armistice (the majority of the casualties are therefore not Australian, but mainly 54th (East Anglian) Division). These smaller burial grounds were known as Bedford Ridge, West Ham Gully, Waldron's Point, Essex, Aghyl Dere, Eastern Mounted Brigade, Suffolk, Hampshire Lane Nos. 1 and 2, Australia Valley, 116th Essex, 1/8th Hants, Norfolk, Junction, and 1/4th Northants.
