Near the Armenian border, this Turkish city was a part of the Armenian Kingdom during antiquity. It is now an important military town. Kars is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ani, which was the Bagratid capital in the 10th Century. Kars was captured in the 11th Century by the Seljuk Turks and then taken by the Mongols in the 13th Century. It became a part of the Ottoman Empire in 1514. The city successfully held back the Iranians and the Russians before eventually falling to the Russians in 1828. It was returned to Turkey in 1918. The Soviet Union attempted to reclaim Kars as a part of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic in the 1940s and failed.

Topkapi (pronounced: tope cap ah) Palace was home to 30 Ottoman Sultans over four centuries and held 1,000-4,000 inhabitants, including up to 300 in the harem. It was built between the years of 1460 and 1478 by Mehmet the Conqueror. Shortly after the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1924 Topkapi Palace was announced as a museum making it the first in the country. The Palace is filled with famous collections, building, and gardens to visit. There is a grand china collection all the way from Japan and China and Jewels that have been amassed over the years. The Pavilion of the Conqueror holds one of the largest cut diamonds in the world, the Topkapi Dagger, and other beautiful artifacts. The Imperial archives contain roughly 300,000 documents that give a glimpse into the history of the Ottoman empire.

Kapadokya (in English: Cappadocia) is located in the Ta**us Mountains of central Turkey. Its landscape includes expansive volcanic rock sprawled throughout a desert plateau. These volcanic rocks are nicknamed “fairy chimneys” and are shaped into cone-like towers which housed dwellers and early Christians. There are remnants of the underground tunnel systems which come from the Byzantine and Islamic eras. Kapadokya is filled with ancient artifacts, remains the Hittite-Assyrian city Kanesh, and excavations of other towns. Thousands of tablets have been discovered which are some of the oldest written documents uncovered in Turkey.

Don’t let the title mislead you, Turkey has some wonderful food. From chef köfte to baklava, you are not short on delicious things to choose from. My mouth waters at the thought of any upcoming meal but the best part of Turkey isn’t the food, it’s the people. If you come to a country eager for the food but not the people, you are missing the most valuable part of a culture.
