Mehmet von Königstreu - Ludwig Maximilian Mehmet
Founder of the Lodge Friedrich (today: Friedrich zum weissen Pferde: https://fzwp.org/
)
(~ 1660–1726), son of the Turkish general von Koron,
The noble name Mehmet von Königstreu goes back to the Ottoman prisoner of war Ludwig Maximilian Mehmet. The usual spelling today as “Royal loyalty” is incorrect; Mehmet himself and his children always wrote the noble name without the binding “s”, as noted in the imperial nobility certificate.
Ludwig Maximilian Mehmet was born around 1670 as the son of an Ottoman upper-class family in Koroni (Peloponnese) and fell into the hands of Brunswick-Lüneburg mercenary troops as live spoils of war when the fortress there was captured in 1685 as part of the Venetian-Ottoman War (1684–1699).
In 1687 he came to the court of the future Elector of Hanover, converted to the Evangelical Lutheran faith and was given a position as a valet. On April 13, 1706, he married the 17-year-old Maria Hed(e)wig Wedekind (1689–1729), daughter of the “citizen and brewer” Hans Wedekind and his wife Sophia Hedwig (née vom Sode). In 1714 he came to London in the entourage of Elector Georg Ludwig, where the latter was crowned King of Great Britain as George I. In 1716 he was raised to hereditary imperial nobility by the emperor as “von Königtreu”.
In 1723 he received the house at Schmiedestraße 30, the old city bailiwick, as a gift. However, he never lived in this house himself, as he lived in London until his death on November 1, 1726, where he was also buried. His wife only survived him for a few years; she died on March 22, 1729.
