📍 Hierapolis – Pamukkale, Türkiye
Where ancient history and natural wonder come together 🌿✨
Hierapolis is an ancient city located right next to the Pamukkale travertines in Turkey. It’s on the UNESCO World Heritage List thanks to both its historical significance and natural beauty.
The city was founded in the 2nd century BC by the Kingdom of Pergamon. Later, it became an important thermal treatment center during the Roman Empire. One of the main reasons for its popularity was the belief in the healing properties of its hot springs. In fact, many elderly Romans used to come here for treatment, and some even referred to it as the “city of the elderly.”
One of the most striking structures in Hierapolis is the ancient theater. With a capacity of around 12,000 people, it’s quite large for its time and still very well preserved. Other ruins include ancient baths, the Temple of Apollo, the Plutonium (a cave believed to be an entrance to the underworld), the agora, and the ancient colonnaded street.
There’s also the Antique Pool (Cleopatra’s Pool), where you can swim among fallen columns. According to legend, Cleopatra herself once swam here, which makes the experience even more special. 🏛💦
