📍 Hierapolis – Pamukkale, Türkiye
Where ancient history and natural wonder come together 🌿✨

Hierapolis is an ancient city located right next to the Pamukkale travertines in Turkey. It’s on the UNESCO World Heritage List thanks to both its historical significance and natural beauty.

The city was founded in the 2nd century BC by the Kingdom of Pergamon. Later, it became an important thermal treatment center during the Roman Empire. One of the main reasons for its popularity was the belief in the healing properties of its hot springs. In fact, many elderly Romans used to come here for treatment, and some even referred to it as the “city of the elderly.”

One of the most striking structures in Hierapolis is the ancient theater. With a capacity of around 12,000 people, it’s quite large for its time and still very well preserved. Other ruins include ancient baths, the Temple of Apollo, the Plutonium (a cave believed to be an entrance to the underworld), the agora, and the ancient colonnaded street.

There’s also the Antique Pool (Cleopatra’s Pool), where you can swim among fallen columns. According to legend, Cleopatra herself once swam here, which makes the experience even more special. 🏛💦

🔺Bodrum Castle and Underwater Archaeology Museum
Built in the early 15th century by the Knights of St. John, Bodrum Castle is a historical landmark reflecting the region’s rich maritime heritage. Strategically located on a site with fortifications dating back to 1110 BC, the castle incorporates materials from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, adding to its historical depth.

🔺Architectural Highlights
The castle features five distinct towers—French, Spanish (Snake), German, Italian, and English—each showcasing unique architectural styles. Originally built with a single wall, it was later reinforced for added defense. Its walls are adorned with painted coats of arms and reliefs, including the emblem of King Henry IV of England.

🔺Transformation into a Museum
After being vacant post-World War I, the castle was repurposed in the 1960s as the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology. This globally renowned museum houses maritime artifacts, ancient shipwreck relics, and insights into naval civilizations.

🔺A Must-Visit Destination
Now a major tourist attraction, Bodrum Castle offers panoramic views of the Bodrum Peninsula and a deep dive into underwater archaeology. Recognized on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List, it remains a symbol of history and culture in the Aegean.

🧚‍♀️The Land of Turkish Fairy Tales
The fairy chimneys are not only fascinating geological formations but also carry enchanting legends. The local people believe that these rock formations were built by fairies, which is why they are called “fairy chimneys.” According to one legend, fairies once lived in harmony with humans in this region. However, as humans began to harm the mystical world of the fairies, they decided to hide themselves. It is said that only those with pure hearts can still see them. Some beliefs even suggest that the fairy chimneys glow at night and that the fairies still reside there.
🔺These supernatural tales have been shaped by traces of ancient civilizations in the region. It is known that the Hittites (2000-1200 BC), Phrygians, and Persians existed in Cappadocia. Over time, folk narratives merged with stories from Christian monks and Ottoman-era folklore, transforming into the mystical legends told today.
Additionally, the cave dwellings and underground cities in the region show that Cappadocia has been home to various civilizations throughout history.
🔺Exploring the Fairy Chimneys in Cappadocia
There are many ways for visitors to explore the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia. The Göreme Open-Air Museum, Paşabağ Valley, and Devrent Valley are some of the most popular spots to closely observe these fascinating rock formations. Moreover, sunrise hot air balloon tours offer a magical opportunity to witness the fairy chimneys in their dreamlike landscape.
