He turns the iron pipe slowly. The glass behaves the way honey behaves, only hotter. One breath. Then another. A vessel begins.
The furnace at Beykoz, on the Asian shore of Istanbul, was once kept stocked for the Ottoman court. Topkapı ordered its first piece from here three hundred years ago, and the fire has never quite gone out. What emerges is çeşm-i bülbül, the eye of the nightingale. Twisted threads of cobalt and gold drawn through clear crystal. Three hundred years on, no two pieces are alike.

Her teacher learned from her teacher. Her teacher’s teacher worked for a sultan. The line is unbroken.
Iznik. A workshop opens at dawn the way it has for five hundred years. Cobalt, coral, turquoise. The same pigments the Ottoman court demanded, still ground by hand. The clay rests. The paint rests. The kiln does its quiet violence. Three days later, a tile emerges that will outlive her grandchildren. And one day, it finds a wall.

5 mistakes everyone makes on their first trip to Türkiye 🇹🇷
i. ✗ 2 nights in Istanbul → ✓ 4 nights, minimum.
ii. ✗ Cappadocia in August → ✓ April or October.
iii. ✗ A random Bosphorus dinner cruise → ✓ the right one (it’s a fine-dining night).
iv. ✗ All of Türkiye in 10 days → ✓ one region, deep.
v. ✗ Same airport in and out → ✓ open-jaw IST → AYT.
Bonus: the most local Istanbul moment costs less than a euro. Public ferry, Karaköy to Kadıköy at sunset, a 15₺ simit in hand. Tear pieces, toss them in the air, watch the seagulls race to catch them mid-flight.

Türkiye’s first long-distance trail runs from Fethiye to Antalya, along cliffs the Lycians walked 3,000 years ago. CNN once named it among the ten best walks in the world. Most international travellers still haven’t heard of it.

The Bosphorus, hour by hour. 🌊
One day on the strait that divides two continents and lets them both watch each other wake up.
05:30 — The first ferry leaves before the city is awake.
09:00 — Commuters with simit in one hand and çay in the other.
12:30 — Balık ekmek from a swaying fish-boat. No queue moves faster, no sandwich tastes better.
18:30 — The Bosphorus turns copper for forty minutes a day. Photographers know it. Everyone else just stops talking.
20:00 — The Maiden’s Tower lights up first. The sky still pretends it is not night yet.
22:30 — Two continents wear necklaces of light.
02:00 — Only the call to prayer for fajr will break it. The strait keeps its own time tonight.
