Located in the backstreets of Istanbul's conservative Fatih district is one of the Byzantine Empire's most beautiful legacies to the city: The Chora Museum (Kariye Müzesi). Similarly to the Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet, Chora was consecrated as a Byzantine Greek Orthodox church and became a mosque in the 16th century under the rule of Sultan Bayezid II. What many modern-day visitors come to see are the fine gilded mosaics and frescoes that depict the life of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. Stories from the Old Testament, as well as frescoes portraying the scenes of the judgment day, resurrection and last judgment also cover the walls and ceilings - the age and detail of which make Chora a heavenly place visit away from the tourist crowds.

Suleymaniye Mosque: Built by the famous Ottoman architect, Sinan in the mid-16th century, the UNESCO-protected Suleymaniye Mosque (Süleymaniye Camii) is one of Istanbul’s most important architectural treasures. The mosque is the centerpiece of a broader complex commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent that holds a prominent position on Istanbul’s iconic skyline overlooking the Golden Horn. The complex included a library, hospital, Turkish bath, shops, and the tombs, where the sultan and his wife, Hürrem Sultan are resting forevermore. When you visit the mosque there are several things to look out for – other than the spectacular view. The four minarets symbolize Suleiman the Magnificent as the fourth sultan to reign over Istanbul and the ten balconies on these minarets represent him as being the tenth Ottoman sultan in history.

Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum: This museum was the first of its kind in Turkey to present a comprehensive collection of Turkish and Islamic art and has the distinction of being the last museum to open during the Ottoman era. The Turkish and Islamic Art Museum (Turk ve Islam Eserleri Muzesi) started in 1914 in the soup kitchen of the Suleymaniye Mosque complex and moved to its current address in 1983: the İbrahim Paşa Palace, on the edge of the Hippodrome. Home to a rich collection of Ottoman-period artworks, the museum also contains rare Ottoman documents such as sultans’ decrees, pardons and foundation charters. The carpet collection, including close to 1,700 pieces, is one of the most extensive carpet collections in the world.

Galata Tower: The nine-story, 67-meter-tall Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) is an ideal location for 360-degree views of the city, especially at sunset. It is not known precisely when a tower was established here, though the present form dates back to 1348. It was built by the Genoese settlement that lived in today’s Galata and Karaköy neighborhoods during the Byzantine times. Once a fire tower, observatory, and prison, perhaps the tower’s most famous role was being the platform for history’s first man-made flight. In 1632, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi flew from the top of the tower, across the Bosphorus, to Üsküdar with wings that he invented himself. These days, long queues can form for sunset, so best to get there an hour before the sun dips behind the skyline.

Galata Mevlevi Museum: This complex was the first Mawlawi House in İstanbul for practicing dervishes of the Mevlevi Sufi Islam sect. The original house was built in 1491, but a subsequent earthquake (1509) and fire (1765) required the rebuilding and refurbishment of the main hall that dates back to the early 19th century. In 1925, it ceased to operate as a dervish tekke (lodge) and later, opened as a museum in 1975. Today the museum is a tribute to the building's role in Istanbul and Sufism. Members of the public can visit every Sunday at 5 pm to see a whirling dervish ceremony that's on UNESCO's list of the world's intangible heritage treasures.

Kız Kulesi: With uninterrupted views of the finest sights in the city, this tower is a hotspot for special occasions and sightseeing – particularly for couples drawn to the tower’s legendary love stories and prophecies. The Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi) is the most recognized and symbolic landmark in the city, as it seemingly floats in the waters of the Bosphorus just 200 meters from the Salacak seaside. Since 24 B.C. the tiny isle has played many important roles in Istanbul’s illustrious past: a customs station, a Byzantine tollbooth, a lighthouse, an Ottoman watchtower, and nowadays, a restaurant and café. Boats to the tower depart from Salacak and Kabataş ports throughout the day and evening.
