Ağrı Ishak Pasha Palace

This picture is not from a game or a movie... This picture is from the dream land which is the land of Noah's Ark...

İshak Pasha Palace is more of a complex than a mere palace. It is our second administrative campus after the Topkapı Palace in İstanbul and the most famous of the palaces built at recent decades.

The palace which was built on a hill at the side of a mountain 5 km. east of Doğubeyazıt District is the last large monumental structure of the Ottoman Empire in the "Lale Devri" Period. It is one of the most distinguished and magnificent examples of the 18thcentury Ottoman architecture and is very valuable in terms of art history. According to the top of the door inscription at the Harem Section it was constructed in 1784 (1199 H.) according to the Islamic calendar.

As the ground building sits on is a valley slope, it is rocky and hard. Despite the fact that it is at the center of the Old Beyazıt city its three sides (north, west, south) are steep and sloped. There is a suitable flat area only to the east. The entrance of the palace is on that side. It's also its narrowest façade.

Side Ancient City

Side (Σίδη) (meaning pomegranate) is located in the region of Pamphylia in Anatolia(modern-day Turkey) and was both a prosperous Aegean trading centre in Hellenistic and Roman times and a base for Cilician pirates in the 1st and 2nd centuries BCE.

Strabo tells us that the city of Side was founded around the 7th century BCE by Greek colonisers from Kyme in Aeolis. The natural geography of the area made it an ideal place in Anatolia for trade and a harbour. Arrian tells us that the colonizers did not understand the dialect of the locals, indicating that the area was already inhabited. Arrian asserts that the indigenous language had a strong influence, though, and gradually became the primary language in Side. This is seen in several of the inscriptions in the local tongue uncovered at the site. The Hittites also have connections to the area as attested by other artefacts found such as a basalt columnbase.

Pamukkale teases the brain. You’re in bare feet and you walk gingerly; well, it’s easy to slide around on the slopes. It’s constant split second feelings of being in an Alpine ski resort before your conscious self brings your brain right back to the travertines. At the same time, you walk gingerly because you’re climbing a rock face in your bare feet and it’s rough underfoot.

‘Unreal’ Says UNESCO

‘An unreal landscape made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins,’ is how UNESCO describes Pamukkale. It’s as though those cascading waters have been frozen in time. A sudden waft of a magic wand and motion becomes motionless. Of course, in reality, there’s nothing sudden about Pamukkale. This is geology and science at work over years numbering their thousands. And what they’ve created is mesmerising.

The surreal, brilliant white travertine terraces and warm, limpid pools of Pamukkale hang, like the petrified cascade of a mighty waterfall, from the rim of a steep valley side in Turkey’s picturesque southwest. Truly spectacular in its own right, the geological phenomenon that is Pamukkale, literally "Cotton Castle" in Turkish, is also the site of the remarkably well-preserved ruins of the Greek-Roman city of Hierapolis. With such a unique combination of natural and man-made wonders it’s little wonder that Pamukkale-Hierapolis has been made a Unesco World Heritage site. With over two million visitors annually, it is also Turkey’s single most visited attraction.

Selimiye Koyu, a large bay, is entered between points; Sığ Burun and Karaburun, 1M to the SW. There are number of anchorages, but the floating pier by village is the main anchorage for berthing. After passing Sığ Burun and turn for village of Selimiye, there are dangerous reefs-1,5 m deep, 30-40 m long, and about 250 m offshore-directly on your route. A buoy indicates these reefs. There are also rocks 350 m off the point Karaburun towards Selimiye village, extend for about 40-50 m. Stay well off these rocks.

Hierapolis-Pamukkale

Deriving from springs in a cliff almost 200 m high overlooking the plain, calcite-laden waters have created at Pamukkale (Cotton Palace) an unreal landscape, made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins. At the end of the 2nd century B.C. the dynasty of the Attalids, the kings of Pergamon, established the thermal spa of Hierapolis. The ruins of the baths, temples and other Greek monuments can be seen at the site.

Ephesus

Located within what was once the estuary of the River Kaystros, Ephesus comprises successive Hellenistic and Roman settlements founded on new locations, which followed the coastline as it retreated westward. Excavations have revealed grand monuments of the Roman Imperial period including the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre. Little remains of the famous Temple of Artemis, one of the “Seven Wonders of the World,” which drew pilgrims from all around the Mediterranean. Since the 5th century, the House of the Virgin Mary, a domed cruciform chapel seven kilometres from Ephesus, became a major place of Christian pilgrimage. The Ancient City of Ephesus is an outstanding example of a Roman port city, with sea channel and harbour basin.

The History Of Hittites ( BC. 1650 - 1200 )

The period of Assyrian Trade Colonies made it possible for new social and political opinions to emerge. The concept of central government, as it did in Mesopotamia, started to develop in Anatolia which was governed by new princes. The Hitttites, who were Indo-European, mixed with the native population after stepping Anatolia through Caucasus in BC 3000.

Hittites took the control after Assyrians had to evacuate Anatolia. They mixed with native population of Anatolia and established Hitttites Government. The founder of this state is Labarna. The capital is Boğazköy- Hattis.

The history Hittites can be categorized in two groups : first is the old Kingdom between BC 1650-1450 and the second is the Hittites Empire Period between BC 1450-1200. Hittites attacked Syria after establishing their sovereignty in Anatolia. They also signed the first written treaty called Kadeş Treaty in BC 1269 after the war with Egyptians in BC 1274. Since the foundation of Hittites, the Mesopatamian notions in arts disappeared and integrated with Anatolian native arts. The big size monumental pieces started to appear in arts. Temples, palaces, social structures, stone reliefs and orthostats are different from the former arts. Hittites collapsed after the Sea Migration Period (Barbarian Invasion) and the attack of Kaskade Tribes from the north.
