Echoes of İzmir’s Greek Heritage🇬🇧
Built in 1886, this Orthodox Greek Church is located in the neighborhood that bears its name—now known as the Kapılar district, Etiler Neighborhood—in the area between 1257, 1274, and 1281. Although other Greek Orthodox churches in the city were destroyed during the great fire of İzmir in 1922, the Ayavukla Church was spared. It later lost its function following the departure of the Greek population from İzmir as part of the population exchange. In recent years, state-of-the-art restoration work has been carried out on the church, which had been neglected and in a state of disrepair.

A Fortress Through the Ages🇬🇧
Apart from the Yeşilova Mound and Ancient Smyrna (Izmir), this is the area where the city was reestablished on Pagos (Kadife Mountain). Founded in the 4th century BCE, the city contains remains from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods that have survived to this day. It is said that the Amazon women who lived in Kadifekale—formerly known as “Pagos”—came down from the foothills of the mountain and maintained their rule here for many years. This castle was built by “Lysimachos,” one of Alexander the Great’s generals. Of Kadifekale, only the five towers on the west side of the castle and a section of the walls on the south side remain today.

Heritage on the Shores of İzmir🇬🇧
The name Karşıyaka comes from “Coeur de Lion,” which means “Lionheart” in French. During the Third Crusade, the armies of Richard the Lionheart camped in Karşıyaka and named this area—which was forested at the time—“Cordelion,” after Richard the Lionheart. There are various historical sites in the Karşıyaka area, including mansions and monuments. Examples include the Van Der Zee Mansion and the statue of Bombacı Ali Çavuş.

Patrimonio A Orillas De Esmirna🇪🇸

In the Footsteps of Atatürk🇬🇧
The museum building was constructed between 1875 and 1880 by the carpet merchant Takfor to serve as his home. On September 9, 1922, it was abandoned by its owner and transferred to the state. The Turkish army, upon entering Izmir, used this building as its headquarters. When the Izmir Economic Congress convened on February 17, 1923, Atatürk conducted his personal work here. On October 13, 1926, the building was purchased by the Izmir Municipality, furnished with some new items, and presented as a gift to Atatürk. Atatürk stayed at this house every time he visited Izmir between 1930 and 1934.
