Where roses are black...

Türkiye is the only place in the world where natural black roses grow, fed by the waters of the Euphrates. A very rare type of flower, only in the village of Halfeti, southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, near Urfa province.
They appear black during the summer, in other seasons they are very dark red. This variety is due to the density of the soil and the combination of anthocyanins, water-soluble pigments; The soil has a huge impact on this type of pigment, since it is quite sensitive to pH. 🖤

Welcome to 🇮🇹

is a dark red made from the varietal (wine ) of the same name. Hailing from the Tuscan hilltop town of Montepulciano, this thick-skinned red grape is a cousin of the Sangiovese grape, and is mostly grown in central Italy, particularly the Abruzzo region.

Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)
Off they go!!
The very last Hawksbill turtle nest laid for the 2020 season has emerged this week. The conservation team released 160 hatchlings from this nest and a whopping 20728 hatchlings in total for the season. This number seems immense especially for our little island but when we think about how very few survive to adulthood, with estimates ranging from one in 1000 to one in 10000, sadly it is not very many. This is what drives Cousine Island to do its best to contribute to help save this magnificent species.
