The Istanbul Archaeology Museums reopened after years of restoration, and there’s a lot more to see now than a quick walk-through.
It’s three buildings under one ticket. The Museum of the Ancient Orient got a full layout redesign; you’ll find pre-Islamic Arabian, Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Anatolian artefacts, including a copy of the Treaty of Kadesh and clay tablets, one believed to be the oldest known love poem.
The main Archaeology Museum is where you’ll spend most of your time: the Alexander Sarcophagus, the Sidamara Sarcophagus, the Troy Gallery, and the coin collections.
The Tiled Kiosk, built in 1472, is the oldest structure in the complex and holds centuries of Ottoman tile and ceramic work.
Open daily 09:00–18:45, plus a Night Museology slot 19:00–22:00. Tickets are €15, Museum Pass accepted.
One exhibit, Tomb Cult in Antiquity, is still closed for restoration. If you’re into history, sculpture, or ceramics, it’s worth it | if it’s not really your thing, you can also explore it for free online through the Virtual Museum project.
