Koç University’s Department of Archaeology and History of Art (ARHA) is pleased to
announce its 8th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium, which will be held on October 21st at Koç University Campus in Rumelifeneri, Istanbul.

The symposium titled The Show Must Go On: Symbolism and Performativity aims to investigate various manifestations of artistic and cultural acts revolving around performance and symbolism in order to discuss their enduring prevalence and trace their nuances in different spatial, temporal, social, and personal contexts. Outcomes of performance and symbols as employed in building identity, constructing gender, expressing self, and defining community will be analyzed. Our definition of symbolism and performativity is broad: it embraces the sacred and the secular, the social and the personal, and the spectacular and the quotidian. Moreover, performativity, or the interdependent relationship between words and actions, emerges as a topic of interest in this framework, owing to its reflections in the arts.

This symposium seeks to bring together a diverse range of perspectives and disciplines
concerned with a span of subjects, areas and periods of research converging around the theme
of performance and symbolism in the arts and culture. Paper topics may include, but are not limited to:

• The lifecycle of symbols and objects;
• Intangible cultural heritage;
• State power and theatricality, ceremonies, and processions;
• Performativity in museum studies;
• Interpreting symbols/semiotics;
• Landscape archaeology as it relates to symbolism and performance;
• Documenting performance (paintings, mosaics, etc. depicting performances);
• Shifting narratives in art history interpretation (reinterpretation of symbols/ism); and
• Staging and restaging symbolic representations

Students of archaeology, art history, history, cultural heritage, museum studies, and related fields are invited to present research related to Anatolia and its neighboring regions, including the Mediterranean, Aegean, Black Sea, the Balkans, the Levant, and the Near East, from the earliest prehistoric times through the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Classical, Byzantine and Ottoman periods, and into contemporary times.

All graduate students are encouraged to apply, including M.A. and Ph.D. students at any stage of their studies. The conference will be held in English, but we are open to accepting presentations and posters in both English and Turkish. Applicants should submit their name, affiliation, and 250-word abstract by April 30th through the attached google form:

Koç Üniversitesi Arkeoloji ve Sanat Tarihi Bölümü (ARHA), 26 Mart 2020’de Beyoğlu, İstanbul’da bulunan Koç Üniversitesi Anadolu Medeniyetleri Araştırma Merkezi’nde (ANAMED) gerçekleştirilecek olan 8. Yıllık Lisansüstü Öğrenci Araştırma Sempozyumu’nu duyurmaktan memnuniyet duyar.

Performans: Aktörler, Objeler, Mekânlar başlıklı sempozyum, performans etrafında şekillenen sanatsal ve kültürel eylemlerin çeşitli tezahürlerini incelemeyi amaçlarken onların süregelen yaygınlığını tartışmaya açmayı ve farklı mekânsal, zamansal, toplumsal ve kişisel bağlamlardaki nüanslarının izini sürmeyi merkezine almaktadır. Kimliğin şekillenmesi, toplumsal cinsiyetin inşası, benliğin ifadesi ve topluluğun tanımlanmasında faydalanıldığı şekliyle performans sonuçları analiz edilecektir. Performansı geniş anlamıyla tanımlıyoruz, dolayısıyla kutsal veya seküler olanı, toplumsal veya kişisel olanı, aynı zamanda gösterişli veya gündelik olanı kapsamaktadır. Ayrıca, kelimeler ve eylemler arasındaki bağımlı ilişkiye işaret eden edimsellik, sanattaki yansımaları sebebiyle bu çerçeveyle ilişkili bir konu olarak belirmektedir.

Bu sempozyum, kültür ve sanatta performans temasıyla ilintili çeşitli konu başlıklarını, araştırma alanlarını ve dönemleri de içeren farklı perspektif ve disiplinleri bir araya getirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bildiri konuları, bunlarla kısıtlı olmamakla birlikte, şu konuları içerebilir:

Arkeoloji, sanat tarihi, tarih, kültürel miras, müzecilik ve diğer bağlantılı alanlardan öğrenciler, Anadolu, Akdeniz, Ege, Karadeniz, Balkanlar, Levant ve Yakın Doğu’da Prehistorik dönem, Tunç ve Demir çağları, Klasik dönem, Bizans ve Osmanlı dönemleri ile modern çağı da kapsayan farklı dönemlere dair araştırmalarını sunmaları için davet edilmektedir.

Araştırmalarının herhangi bir aşamasındaki yüksek lisans ve doktora öğrencileri konferansa başvuruda bulunabilirler. Konferans dili İngilizce olmakla birlikte konferans ve poster sunumları İngilizce veya Türkçe olarak yapılabilecektir. Başvuruların 250 kelimelik bir özetle en geç 31 Aralık 2019 tarihinde [email protected] adresine yapılması gerekmektedir.
