The Italian House Dream: Reality vs. Expectations

Our Italian project is officially moving into the "move-in ready" stage! We’ve hit the limit of our budget and our contractor’s schedule, so it’s finally time to show you where we stand.

This isn’t a glossy magazine shoot. This is real life: construction dust on the tiles, unfinished walls, and a whole lot of heart in every corner. Huge thanks to our incredible contractor Andrei Alikberov - he truly brought our vision to life!

👇 In this video, we’re sharing:

The Handmade Heart of the Home: How our contractor built our dream kitchen and office desk from scratch.

The Map Mystery: Why is Europe missing from our new world map in the office?

Is there life after Barolo? 🤔 We spent a day at Salone del Vino Torino 2026 as press to find out — and the answer is a resounding YES!

Castel del Monte: The Crown of Puglia and a Manifesto of Reason 🏰✨Castel del Monte

You have likely seen this castle before, even if you’ve never visited - it’s the very one featured on the Italian 1-cent coin.

Known as the "Crown of Puglia," Castel del Monte is a UNESCO World Heritage site where Islamic culture, Northern Gothic, and Classical antiquity meet in perfect harmony. There are no corridors here - only a circular journey through eight sun-drenched halls.

This castle is perhaps Italy’s greatest architectural enigma. Built by Emperor Frederick II in the 13th century, it breaks every stereotype of its time. There are no moats, no ramparts, and no stables. This isn't a fortress; it is a manifesto of pure reason.

🔹 The Magic of Eight: 8 sides, 8 towers, 8 rooms on each floor. The octagon serves as the symbolic bridge between the Earth (the square) and the Infinite Sky (the circle).
🔹 The Golden Ratio: Legend says Leonardo Fibonacci himself influenced the design. Every line here is measured with millimetric precision.
🔹 A Solar Calendar: The castle is positioned so that during the equinoxes, the shadows fall with mathematical exactness, turning the entire building into a giant astronomical instrument.

Pure lines, zero clutter, and the absolute triumph of geometry.

Our Italian Adventure: Secrets of the Castle and a Near Disaster

We set out on a mission to see the mysterious Castel del Monte, a place built with laser-like precision around the number eight. But the day was anything but perfect. Between getting lost in a "ghost town" and a sudden accident that nearly ended our trip in a hospital, it was a total rollercoaster.

Along the way, we discovered a 100-year-old chocolate shop with some of the most incredible treats we've ever tasted. Mucci Giovanni dal 1894
But the biggest mystery was still ahead: Burrata. It’s not just cheese - there’s a creamy secret hidden inside that you have to see to believe.

We survived the day (barely!), found the magic, and tasted the best of Italy. Want to see what happened to us and what makes this castle so mysterious?

🍷 Is This Italy’s Best Wine Festival?

This year we explored the Salone del Vino Torino 2026, a celebration of Piemonte’s wine culture — where tradition, experimentation, and centuries of history meet in one place.

Instead of trying to taste everything (which would probably require several lives and a heroic liver), we focused on a few stories that reveal the soul of Piemonte.

🌿 Organic wine
At La Corte – Famiglia Sillano, we discovered a philosophy of wine that stays as close to nature as possible — organic vineyards, minimal intervention, and a taste that reflects the land itself.

🏛 Historical wine
At L’Azienda Vitivinicola Balbiano, we encountered something extraordinary: Freisa from the royal vineyard of Villa della Regina, the only historic vineyard located inside the city of Turin. A wine with deep roots in the history of the Savoy kingdom.

⛰ Heroic wine
At Tojo Winery, vines grow on steep hillsides where machines cannot reach. Every grape is harvested by hand — and the wine carries the strength of that landscape.

🍸 The transformation of wine
Piemonte doesn’t stop at wine. We also explored how it evolves into other iconic drinks:

• Divinity Spiritificio — artisanal liqueurs with bold character
• Consorzio del Vermouth di Torino — the legendary aromatized wine born in Turin
• Fontanafredda — a historic winery founded by the first King of Italy in 1858
• Azienda AgriVitiVinicola Garino — passionate winemakers carrying local traditions forward

From natural wines to royal vineyards, from steep mountain slopes to vermouth and liqueurs — Piemonte tells its story through the glass.

🎥 Our new video explores these stories and the people behind them.

Italy is such a magical country.

Sometimes, if you want to feel like you’re traveling abroad, all you need to do is go to a different region. Suddenly the language sounds different, the food changes, the landscapes shift — and the hospitality is overwhelming.

Visiting Southern Italy, in a region as rich in history as Puglia — and during Carnival — isn’t that a fairytale?

This is the first video in our new series where we’ll share this journey with you. Every day was a new adventure. And every single day something unexpected happened.

We experienced one of the longest and oldest carnivals in Italy.
We tasted real burrata.
We tried to unravel the mystery of the famous octagonal castle.
We sang “Volare” in the hometown of its author.
And I badly twisted my ankle because I couldn’t stop looking around — how could you watch your step when everything around you is so beautiful?

And that’s not all.

We even met some of our subscribers in Matera — which felt almost as epic as the ancient city itself.

This series is going to be special.
This is real Italy — through the eyes of two foreigners: a Russian (or maybe almost Italian by now?) and a newcomer American.

There are carnivals everywhere in Italy — even close to our home in Piemonte.
But we wanted something unique.

So we flew to Southern Italy to experience the historic Putignano Carnival — one of the oldest in the country.

Was it really worth the trip?

You’ll find out soon on our YouTube channel.

And now we wait…
Very soon the winner of this edition will be announced.

Ever dreamed of having an entire royal castle all to yourself?

We found a "hidden gem" just an hour away from Turin - the stunning Castello di Agliè! It’s like stepping back in time without the crowds.

Why you should check it out:
✅ It was built way back in 1140!
✅ It was a summer residence for the Italian Royal Family.
✅ The interiors, art, and furniture are absolutely mind-blowing.
✅ The gardens are so huge and quiet, you’ll feel like royalty.

But be warned - it gets freezing inside, and the tour guide moves fast! ❄️

Want to see what it looks like inside and hear the crazy history of this place?
