What's a GoodWorld Journey?

More than a retreat, it’s a gathering of creative minds, anchored in conversation, stories, music, excursions, and shared meals—all rooted in the power of place and pace.

We believe wisdom emerges when we slow down. Each Salon program invites you to listen deeply, wander freely, and engage mindfully with inspired thinkers and inventive storytellers.

Journey days are spaciously scheduled with a balance of engaging creative conversations combined with restorative time to explore, connect, and reflect.

Morning craft talks and evening Salons explore how art and story shape our lives, led by accomplished writers, poets, and musicians in settings that invite rest and renewal.

✨ The next chapter begins summer 2026.

When Nobel and Pulitzer-prize winning novelist Toni Morrison died in 2019, George Saunders paid tribute to her in The New Yorker this way:

“What I cherish most about Toni Morrison’s work is the way that she used the English language: to its fullest, across its entire range, from the poetic to the profane. When you read her work, the world changes, becoming more beautiful and expansive and complicated via every sentence. You are in contact with a great soul, and you know this because the soul has infused every line; there is nothing common or unconsidered or small in them; her largesse is present in every phrase. I turned to her, as so many writers have, the way a painter might turn to Picasso: to see what true greatness looks like and to gauge the distance between it and me.”

We’re thrilled that Cheryl Strayed & Brian Lindstrom and Rachel DeWoskin & Zayd Ayers Dohrn will be returning back next summer to Patmos, where these two couples originally led an inspiring, wisdom-filled and joyous Salon — The Journey Is Your Story — in 2015.

Through lectures, conversations, and creative exercises, this “ fab four ” will share their experiences, insights, and tips on memoir, poetry, fiction, film, audio storytelling, theater, and the arts in general as paths to universal human truths. Timeless Greek myths and the Island of Patmos will serve as inspiration for our collaborative explorations.

“One of the most memorable teaching experiences of my life,” is how Booker-Prize-winning writer George Saunders (author of Lincoln in the Bardo & Tenth of December) describes his GoodWorld Journey experience on Patmos.

“It’s something about the beauty and peacefulness of the setting and, if I could say it this way, the purity of intention that surrounds the Salon, which is designed for artists, by artists.

The Salon seemed to really change and help the attendees, whether they were writers or simply readers who wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the process by which a book is written – the way writers think and the relation of the creative process to the business of living a full life. I’ve taught in a lot of places and settings and I have to say that the bonds that came of out our 2018 experience were extraordinary.”

Bestselling author Margaret Atwood has written more than 40 books of fiction, poetry, short stories, and critical essays.

Atwood’s writing advice is short & simple: “You become a writer by writing. There is no other way. So do it. Do it more. Do it again. Do it better. Fail. Fail better.”
