Ephesus is one of the largest Roman archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean. The visible ruins still give some idea of the city's original splendour, and the names associated with the ruins are evocative of its former life. The theatre dominates the view down Harbour Street, which leads to the silted-up harbour. The Library of Celsus, the façade of which has been carefully reconstructed from original pieces, was originally built c. 125 AD in memory of Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, an Ancient Greek who served as governor of Roman Asia (105–107) in the Roman Empire. Celsus paid for the construction of the library with his own personal wealth and is buried in a sarcophagus beneath it. The library was mostly built by his son Gaius Julius Aquila and once held nearly 12,000 scrolls. Designed with an exaggerated entrance — so as to enhance its perceived size, speculate many historians — the building faces east so that the reading rooms could make best use of the morning light.

Ephesus is located around 200 kilometers away from Pamukkale, making it a manageable 2.5-hour drive between these two historical sites. This proximity offers visitors the opportunity to explore these significant landmarks in Turkey in a multi-day trip efficiently. The drive also provides a scenic journey through the Turkish landscape, allowing travelers to appreciate the beauty of the region while en route to their destination. Overall, the close distance between Ephesus and Pamukkale simplifies travel logistics and enhances the experience of exploring these iconic locations.

We do not recommend doing a day trip to Pamukkale from Istanbul. Ephesus is the highlight of the area. For travelers who would like to visit Pamukkale from Istanbul. We recommend 1 night 2 days trip from Istanbul that includes both Ephesus and Pamukkale. We offer 2 Days Tour of Ephesus and Pamukkale.

Known also as the Celcus Library, was built in 110AD. by Gaius Julius Aquila in memory of his father, Celcus (former proconsul of the Province of Asia and friend of the Emperor Trajan -106AD died), and once held nearly 12,000 scrolls. In the Roman period all but the bodies of heroes were buried outside the borders of cities. Aquila was granted permission for his father to be buried in a marble grave in a burial chamber in the library. Celsus' sarcophagus lay inside the building, under the middle apse. Today it is very hard for the travelers to see the sarchaphagus. Depending on the light conditions, some parts can be seen.
