4 Days-6 Ancient Cities of the Aegean Private Tour 🇪🇸 🏛️
Ephesus-Pamukkale, Hierapolis-Pergamon-Priene, Miletus and Didyma
DAY - 4 PRIENE, MILETUS AND DIDYMA.
Priene was an important ancient city in Ionia, known as Πριήνη in Greek and Prien in Turkish. It was located about six kilometers north of the Maeander River and was originally on the coast by the Latmian Gulf, but over time, it became more inland due to river deposits. The city was built on slopes that rose to 380 meters and was strategically placed near other ancient cities like Anthea, Aneon, and Miletus. Priene is celebrated for its Hellenistic art and architecture and had a modest population of around four to five thousand, meaning it did not hold significant political power.
Priene was divided into four main areas: the political district contained the bouleuterion and prytaneion for governance; the cultural area focused around the theatre; commercial activities were held in the agora; and religious practices were centered on temples dedicated to Zeus, Demeter, and the Temple of Athena.
Miletus, another significant ancient city located on the western coast of Turkey, was known for its wealth and maritime strength. It was the birthplace of early philosophers like Thales and played a key role in Greek philosophical development. Miletus had a thriving trade network and founded many colonies, contributing to Greek culture and commerce.
Didyma, associated with Miletus, was a major sanctuary dedicated to Apollo, which included temples for both Apollo and Artemis. The sanctuary was notable for its oracle, attracting many pilgrims seeking guidance. Miletus remained influential despite being under various foreign rules, preserving its cultural and intellectual traditions through history and shaping urbanism, science, and philosophy in the Greek world.

Last minute request for a Ephesus tour which was such a great experience.
Not being history buffs, our tour guide was great in giving us the background and context to be able to appreciate it all.

Private Ephesus Tour | History Only | No Shopping Stops - Australia 🇦🇺
The monumental triple-arched gateway, also known as the Gate of Augustus or the South Gate, is located at the southeast corner of the Lower (Commercial) Agora, which is also referred to as the Tetragonos Agora and on the north side of Library Square in Ephesus. The gate was built in 4-3 BC and dedicated by two former slaves of the imperial household, Mazeus and Mithridates, who had been freed by Emperor Augustus (r. 27 BC - 14 AD) and went on to become prosperous citizens in Ephesus.

Private Ephesus Tour | History Only | No Shopping Stops - 🇺🇸
The Library of Celsus, located in ancient Ephesus in what is now western Turkey, was an extraordinary testament to Roman architectural and intellectual achievement. Housing more than 12,000 scrolls, the library stood as a prominent symbol of the importance attached to scholarship within the Roman Empire. Constructed in the second century CE and dedicated to Celsus, a prominent Roman governor, the edifice not only signified the reverence for learning in that society but also intersected with the cultural context of early Christian communities. Presently, while only the impressive facade remains, it endures as a visible reminder of Ephesus’s historical significance as an educational and scholarly centre during Roman antiquity.
