Cappadocia (/kæpəˈdoʊʃə/; also Capadocia; Turkish: Kapadokya, from Greek: Καππαδοκία Kappadokía, from Ancient Greek: Καππαδοκία, from Old Persian: Katpatuka) is a historical region in Central Anatolia, largely in Nevşehir Province, in Turkey. In the time of Herodotus, the Cappadocians were reported as occupying the whole region from Mount Ta**us to the vicinity of the Euxine (Black Sea). Cappadoci

a, in this sense, was bounded in the south by the chain of the Ta**us Mountains that separate it from Cilicia, to the east by the upper Euphrates and the Armenian Highland, to the north by Pontus, and to the west by Lycaonia and eastern Galatia. The name was traditionally used in Christian sources throughout history and is still widely used as an international tourism concept to define a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage.

Come, Visit and Discover Ephesus, Turkey-Unesco World Heritage Site. Michael Douglas and his children Dylan and Carys visit Ephesus.

Academy award-winning actor Michael Douglas and his children Dylan and Carys visit Ephesus, Turkey.

On Jan. 8, the Hollywood couple traveled to the Aegean province of İzmir’s Selçuk-Efes Airport on a private jet and started their tour in the ancient city of Ephesus.

During their visit to Ephesus, the most-visited archeological site in Turkey, retired archeologist Cengiz İçten guided the family.

Saying he especially wanted to see the “Yamaç Evler” (“Terrace Houses” in English).

The ancient city was home to numerous magnificent structures, such as those in the region called Yamaç Evler, dwellings thought to have been inhabited by wealthy families.

İçten also said that Douglas found Ephesus more preserved when compared to Italy’s ancient Pompeii.

Ephesus, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was one of the seven churches of Asia that are cited in the Book of Revelation, and the Gospel of John may have been written in the ancient city.

The city, the library façade of which is particularly famous, was also the site of several 5th-century Christian councils.
The ruins of Ephesus are a favorite international and local tourist attraction.

Ephesus Shore Excursion from Kusadasi Port.
Fabulous Find
It was great to feel completely confident that touring Ephesus was all that was on the agenda for us...there would be no high pressure shopping stops at jewellery or carpet or ceramic shops. We had an extremely knowledgeable guide who's English was great and who walked us through this beautiful ancient town knowing when to go slow and give some personal time for photos or exploring.
A REALLY great tour which I would HIGHLY recommend.

“Ephesus Guided Tour”
Shore excursions from a cruise ship are not easy with limited time ashore, but No Frills Ephesus Tours made it easy for us. Knowing that we had only a day, they picked us up and dropped us off at Kusadasi (cruise ship dock.). Also knowing that we wanted to see as much as possible, our guide even accommodated our request to skip lunch and keep going all day until it was to time to return.

I'm an 'do it yourself' adventure traveller most of the time, but I would still recommend No Frills Ephesus Tours even if staying in Seljuk on a land trip. They were very hospitable, knowledgeable, and helped us get the most out of our time there.

“Great Trip To Ephesus”

We booked this tour from Australia and the visit to Ephesus was anticipated to be a highlight of this holiday, we weren't disappointed. When we arrived in Kusadassi earlier than expected, we phoned the company to see if they could start our tour any earlier. They were really helpful and we met our guide and driver just 15 minutes later. We were collected in a mini bus in good condition and our tour started immediately, both driver and guide spoke excellent english. Our guide and driver were both knowledgeable and very helpful. They were very flexible and happy to take us to all the local attractions, but there were no unwanted shopping excursions. I'd highly recommend this company to anyone wanting a good value, personalised, tour of Ephesus and surrounds.

Work begins in massive underground city in central Anatolia
NEVŞEHİR - CAPPADOCIA, TURKEY
A massive underground city, which was discovered last year in the central Anatolian province of Nevşehir and was the year’s biggest archaeological discovery, is being cleaned with a geo-radar machine.
Work has begun around the Nevşehir Fortress, carried out by the Nevşehir Municipality in collaboration with Turkey’s Housing Development Administration (TOKİ), the Governor’s Office and the Culture and Tourism Ministry.
The geo-radar machine is able to determine all gaps and structures up to 10 meters below the surface, accurately mapping out the underground city.
The data collected by the machine, which is operated by a technical team of three people, is then delivered to the excavation team. Thanks to data from this machine, the excavation process is able to be carried out in a way which limits the amount of damage to the structures of the city.
Nevşehir Mayor Hasan Ünver said the cleaning process had started a few days ago and has continued non-stop. He said the world’s largest underground city was 113 meters in height and 460,000 square-meters in area and was very important for the future of tourism in Cappadocia, which is known world-wide for its Fairy Chimneys rock formation.
“The existence of this underground city, which consists of 11 neighborhoods around the Nevşehir Fortress, makes us very excited. We are using the latest technology in its cleaning. When the work is done, we plan to build places like boutique hotels, art galleries, handicraft centers, walking routes, a museum and meeting rooms in the underground city,” the mayor said.
Urban transformation project reveals the city
The underground city was discovered by a TOKİ urban transformation project. Some 1,500 buildings located in and around the Nevşehir fortress were recently demolished and the city was discovered when the earthmoving to construct new buildings started.
The city covers 45 hectares of the total 75 hectare plot within the urban transformation project, which began in 2012. The first galleries were spotted in 2013 and the Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board officially registered the area. So far forty-four historical objects have been taken under preservation.
The city is thought to date back 5,000 years and is located around the Nevşehir Fortress. Escape galleries and hidden churches were discovered inside the underground city.
The tunnels in the city are believed to have been used to carry agricultural products. It is also estimated that one of the tunnels passes under Nevşehir and reaches a faraway water source.
According to Ünver, other underground cities in Nevşehir’s various districts do not even amount to the “kitchen” of this new underground city.

11/02/2015

The Cappadocia Underground Ceramic Museum (Güray Museum) is considered the world’s first rock-carved underground ceramic museum and is a highly popular spot in the Avanos district in the central Anatolian province of Nevşehir.

Established after five years of work by the Güray ceramic factory, one of the oldest ceramic factories in the region, the museum has been displaying nearly 500 pieces since April last year. The museum is located on an area of 1,500 square meters and is 15 meters underground. It also serves for meetings and cultural organizations.

The owner of the museum, Güray Tüysüz, said he had a dream 20 years ago to open the museum and realized his dream after collecting ceramic pieces throughout the years. He said his family has been producing ceramics and pots for five generations in Avanos.

“The museum project had been a dream of 20 years. I could hardly gather the pieces. In the last five years of the project, we carved the rock under our factory and finished the building. This is a first in the world, as an underground rock-carved museum. We show what has been done in Anatolia for ceramic production since the early ages,” he said.

The museum consists of three sections. The first section displays historical artifacts from the first age. The second section displays pieces from more recent centuries under the name “modern age.” The life and works of Turkey’s world famous ceramic artists, some of whom are still alive, are on display in this section. The third section includes a hall, where artists can organize exhibitions, a café and a library.

Güray said they opened the museum to visitors last April and the official opening would take place this year.

“Our museum will be a private one, affiliated with the Culture and Tourism Ministry. It will be visited as a museum in the morning hours and will host meetings, seminars, music concerts and private dinners in the evening hours. Artists will be able to open exhibitions here,” he said.

22-year-old dream of Ephesus will come true in June !

Ephesus’ dream of entering UNESCO World Heritage List to come true this year

The ancient city of Ephesus in western Turkey is expected to enter the UNESCO World Heritage List this year, after 22 years of efforts.

Dating back to the 6th century B.C., Ephesus hosts around 2 million local and international tourists every year. Although it has been added to the UNESCO tentative list, along with 37 other sites in Turkey, it has failed to be included in the main list so far.

Selçuk Mayor Zeynel Bakıcı said his district was blessed thanks to its history, culture, nature, as well as many archaeological sites.

Bakıcı added that it was a "great deficiency" that the ancient city had not been on the UNESCO list up to now but said his team "believed the problem will be solved this year."

The first submission to UNESCO was made in 1994 but was rejected in 2000 and failed to later get results.

“It was a great deficiency that Ephesus is not on this list. But we know where this deficiency comes from. This is why we are now collectively working with the Culture and Tourism Ministry, municipality, museum and the excavation team, as well as with academics. Now all the changes and rearrangements that UNESCO had asked for have been done," Bakıcı said.

"We have finished the reconstruction plan for protection and the land management plan has been approved. Unless something very important goes wrong, the ancient city of Ephesus will become a part of the UNESCO World Heritage permanent list. The 22-year-old dream of Ephesus will come true in June,” he added.

Selçuk is home to the 8,500-year-old ancient city of Ephesus, as well as one of the seven wonders of the world, the Temple of Artemis; the Virgin Mary House; the Church of Saint John, and Şirince village.
