Sad news out of Egypt.... the US rewards Egypt by releasing $1.3b for military aid. Where is their sanctimonious stand on human rights and freedom of speech, when they allow support for this regime yet does not pressure them to release journalists....not just the AJ staff?

Well Summer is knocking at the door and soon the 'Dondurmaci' (ice cream man) will be setting up their stalls on the streets outside cafe's, shops etc. The ice cream itself originates from KahramanMaras (Heroic Marash) and is stickier than most icecreams because of the mastic added to it. It truly is one of the pleasures of Summer here in Turkey and the seller's Ice-capades are brilliant!

Wineries of Thrace (part 6)The organised Winery Appreciation Tour over it was time to take the winery appreciation on the road and take a Family/Winery appreciation journey. Quite close to Tekirdag, in the hills as you leave town there is a lot of roadworks but in the distance towards the Sea of Marmara there are two distinct stone buildings crowning the top of the hill, this is Barbare Winery. We were met by the young English speaking Marketing Manager who greeted us with their local Rose.... We met the good humoured manager Mr Ozcan, who was once a French speaking tour guide from the coast and is now in heaven showing people around his winery and enjoying wine with new friends. Barbare produces 10 varieties of wine, we sadly only had the opportunity to partake of their Elegance and Prestige 2009 vintages, both Bordeaux style wines and very, very nice indeed.

We toured the winery and gardens and I've decided that when the zombie apocalypse comes I'm hiding out with my family in 'this' cellar!

Both the Roach and Salataci families thoroughly enjoyed the visit and had a great laugh with the garrulous Mr Ozcan. I've included the website here, they have around 6 rooms for let at the winery and would make a perfect weekend hideaway. go pay Ozcan a visit you'll laugh till it hurts!

And the aromatic Canola and Mustard crops seems a little intoxicating for my brother in-law

Our thoughts go out to the families, friends and colleagues of those killed or injured in the Soma mine disaster in Manisa Turkey. Rescuers are working hard to find several hundred miners still trapped nearly 2 kilometres underground.

When my husband and I first visited Istanbul as tourists several years ago, we got the requisite blurry shots of the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque over the heads and cameras of other visitors: they're iconic segments of the cityscape, after all, and...
