The Crimson-crested Woodpecker can be seen at a wide range of elevations across Trinidad, from lowland forests to the foothills of the Northern Range. However, despite this broad distribution, they remain less common than their almost identical cousin, the Lineated Woodpecker, which is encountered more frequently across the island.

Although both species are large, striking woodpeckers with bold crests and similar structure, the Crimson-crested tends to prefer more extensive forested habitats, while the Lineated adapts more readily to secondary growth and semi-open areas β€” making it the one birders are more likely to see on a typical outing in Trinidad.

A subtle but helpful field mark: the Crimson-crested shows a more extensive red head in males, whereas the Lineated has a strong white facial stripe pattern that stands out clearly in good light.

Sighted recently !

A splash of gold in the grasslands πŸ’›πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή

The Grassland Yellow-Finch at the Aripo Livestock Station β€” a species that has been on record in Trinidad for nearly 20 years now.

Always special to encounter this open-country finch right here at home. Thriving in pasturelands and wide grass fields, it’s a reminder of how important these habitats are for our local and visiting species.

Simple bird. Strong presence. Beautiful flash of yellow against the green.

Trinidad never stops surprising πŸ‘
