The blue grotto is the most well known and most accessible cave system on Gasparee Island with a mysterious pool at its base. Though rich in history, the island probably saw very little interest by Amerindians due to its lack of fresh water availability.

Our journey begins on Point Baleen, once a well known whaling station where the Baleen whale was hunted relentlessly for its blubber and oils in Trinidad’s gulf of paria, once called the gulf of baleen. International laws protecting the species have since increased their numbers but sadly sighting of these mammals are extremely rare.

Gasparee island, post colonial era, in 1939 once again served as a site of key military importance with the installation of a pair of 4.7 inch Howitzer field guns that were located on Nelson island. However, the guns seen today were originally located at Point Fortin and Point-a-Pierre and the originals from Nelson island placed in the military museum in Chaguaramas.
